Staying the Course: Honda’s Strategic Faith in Joan Mir and Luca Marini Aims for MotoGP Revival
Honda receives support for maintaining confidence in Joan Mir
"Consistency is crucial when attempting to revamp a project."
It is said that Repsol Honda's choice to retain Joan Mir and partner him with Luca Marini for the upcoming season offers them the optimal opportunity for growth.
Mir's recent agreement, securing his position with Honda for an additional two years, might come as a shock considering his challenges since transferring from Suzuki.
Last year, during his inaugural season with Honda, he was so despondent that he considered ending his career.
Following Mir's announcement to remain on board for 2025 and 2026, Sylvain Guintoli of TNT Sports shared his thoughts, stating, “It's a smart move for both Joan and Honda to maintain their current team composition.
Currently, they are in a position where they need to make up ground.
"From the beginning, when Honda initiated alterations to the aerodynamics and the frame, it makes sense for [Mir and Marini] to continue supporting that project."
To reconstruct a project successfully, maintaining consistency is crucial.
"Introducing two additional riders could complicate the process of obtaining valuable insights."
"These individuals are aware of the strategies that fail."
"In assessing the development of bicycles, these individuals are the foremost experts."
This season, Marini made the move to Repsol Honda, stepping up as a factory rider for the first time following his departure from VR46.
Throughout the entire season, he has consistently been at the rear of the pack, firmly anchored at the last position in the MotoGP rankings.
Marini has only secured a single point throughout the season, placing him behind Dani Pedrosa, who participated in a single race as a wildcard entry.
Mir has shown modest improvement in his second year with the underperforming motorcycle.
Honda is set to unveil a new engine at the upcoming Austria round.
Mir and Marini have utilized a less potent variant of Honda's engine during the previous three races, aiming to find the perfect tuning for the motorcycle.
The updated regulations for concessions this year allow Honda to unveil a new engine partway through the season, aimed at boosting their climb back to a leading position.
