Somkiat Chantra’s MotoGP Dream with LCR Honda: Hopes High Amidst 2025 Speculation
"No agreement has been finalized," yet could this turn out to be the most surprising MotoGP racer for 2025?
"I notice on social media and many individuals inquire, 'will you be moving to LCR the following year?'"
Somkiat Chantra, a victor in the Moto2 races, expressed that joining LCR Honda in MotoGP by 2025 would be an ideal scenario for him, though he clarified that no official agreement has been finalized as of now.
In recent times, the rider from Thailand has been heavily rumored to join the MotoGP next year as part of the LCR Honda team, supported by Idemitsu.
LCR team leader Lucio Cecchinello recently verified that discussions are ongoing with Takaaki Nakagami and Chantra, though Chantra appears to be the preferred candidate.
In response to the speculation, Chantra mentioned, "I notice on social networks and a lot of individuals inquire if I'm moving to LCR the following year?"
Currently, there are no agreements in place, but right now, my focus remains on giving my utmost in Moto2. Let's wait and see if a move to LCR or continuing in Moto2 is in the cards for the future.
"However, becoming a MotoGP rider would definitely fill me with immense joy. It's my ultimate dream, so let's wait and see what happens."
"My manager advised me to continue performing at my highest level in Moto2 and suggested we see what the future holds."
Before the summer hiatus, Nakagami had expressed his eagerness to continue his association with LCR and Honda as a racer in MotoGP past 2024.
As the speculation around Chantra intensified, Nakagami revealed to the press during the previous weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix that HRC has presented him with a proposal that has caught his attention, although he refrained from sharing specifics.
If Chantra progresses to compete in MotoGP next season, as it currently seems probable, he will join another ex-Asia Talent Cup competitor in advancing to the top tier of the sport.
Before the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, Trackhouse Racing announced that it had secured Ai Ogura, the runner-up to Chantra in the 2016 ATC, for a two-year contract to join the Aprilia satellite team in MotoGP for the upcoming season.
Recent discussions have surfaced indicating that MotoGP plans to schedule the Thailand Grand Prix as the first race of the 2025 season, offering Chantra an exceptional chance to commence his career in his native country.
