Somkiat Chantra’s MotoGP Dream: From Rumors to Reality with LCR Honda in 2025?
"An agreement hasn't been finalized," yet could this turn out to be MotoGP’s most surprising rider for the 2025 season?
"I notice on social media, and a lot of people inquire, 'are you joining LCR next year?'"
Moto2 victor Somkiat Chantra has expressed that joining LCR Honda in the MotoGP series by 2025 would be an "ideal scenario" for him, although he confirmed that no official agreement has been finalized yet.
In recent weeks, there has been a strong connection made between the Thai motorcyclist and a potential transition to MotoGP next year, specifically with the Idemitsu-supported section of the LCR Honda team.
LCR team leader Lucio Cecchinello recently confirmed that discussions are taking place with Takaaki Nakagami and Chantra. However, Chantra now seems to be the preferred choice.
In response to the speculation, Chantra mentioned, "I've noticed on social media, and I've also received numerous inquiries about whether I'm moving to LCR next year."
"Currently, there are no agreements in place, but for now, I'm focusing all my efforts on Moto2. Let's wait and see whether I'll move to LCR or remain in Moto2 in the upcoming days."
"However, should the opportunity to become a MotoGP rider present itself, I would undoubtedly be overjoyed. It's my ultimate aspiration, so let's wait and see."
"My manager was advising me to continue putting my best effort into Moto2 and suggested we wait and see what the future holds."
Before the summer hiatus, Nakagami had expressed a strong desire to continue his racing career with LCR and Honda in MotoGP after 2024.
Following the circulation of speculations about Chantra, Nakagami revealed to the press during the previous weekend's Austrian Grand Prix that he has been approached with a proposal from HRC that has caught his attention, though he chose not to disclose any specifics.
If Chantra is set to enter MotoGP next season, as it appears probable, he will become one of the two ex-Asia Talent Cup competitors to ascend into the top tier.
Before the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, Trackhouse Racing announced their agreement with Ai Ogura, the 2016 ATC runner-up to Chantra, securing him for a two-year contract to join the Aprilia satellite team in MotoGP for the upcoming season.
Recent developments suggest that MotoGP is considering scheduling the Thailand Grand Prix as the inaugural race of the 2025 season. This move would provide Chantra with the distinct chance to kick off his career in front of a home crowd.
