Sergio Garcia Stays in Moto2 Despite MotoGP Offers: Eyes Championship Victory and Premier Class Move in 2026
Sergio Garcia, the front-runner in the Moto2 championship, expressed, "While I received proposals to join MotoGP, nevertheless…" He added, "It disappoints me not to be competing in MotoGP. My aim for the following season is to secure the championship title and make the leap straight to MotoGP."
Should Sergio Garcia maintain his lead in the Moto2 rankings, he will become one of the few, alongside Tito Rabat (2014) and Johann Zarco (2015), to attempt a title defense instead of immediately advancing to MotoGP.
Amidst teammates Ai Ogura, along with Fermin Aldeguer and likely Somkiat Chantra making the move to the top division in 2025, Garcia has been officially announced to stay on with the MT Helmets-MSi squad.
The Spanish rider mentioned that he received proposals to join MotoGP the following year with Pramac Yamaha and Trackhouse Aprilia, but neither of these opportunities materialized. He noted, "The choice wasn't up to me or the teams."
"This season, I received proposals from a pair of bike producers, yet due to certain circumstances, I was unable to pursue them," Garcia revealed to MotoGP.pl. "I'm content since getting invitations from MotoGP squads has always been my aspiration."
"I received proposals from Pramac Yamaha, Aprilia, and Trackhouse. Why didn't I take those opportunities? I can't disclose the reasons, but it wasn't up to me or the teams to decide. Nevertheless, I'm pleased to have had those options on the table," he mentioned in a rather enigmatic manner.
Garcia has decided to remain in Moto2 for another year, aiming to clinch the championship again this season. If successful, he seeks to match Zarco's achievement by becoming a two-time Moto2 champion.
"Garcia expressed his happiness about remaining with his Boscoscuro-supported Moto2 team for an additional year, a team that assumed the Moto2 grid spots previously held by the erstwhile Pons team this season."
"My aim for this season had been to advance to MotoGP, however, that was not possible. I believe for the upcoming season, I'm with the top squad to facilitate a move to the top tier by 2026."
"I'm displeased about not being a MotoGP rider. My aim for the upcoming year is to secure the championship title and make a straight transition to MotoGP. I have strong belief in my capability to fulfill these objectives next year."
Pramac has not yet disclosed the lineup for its upcoming Yamaha initiative, however, Miguel Oliveira and Jack Miller are favored to pilot the top-tier M1 bikes. Meanwhile, Ogura has been officially announced to join Raul Fernandez at Trackhouse.
Garcia enters the upcoming Aragon race leading by 20 points ahead of his team-mate Ogura, who had to pull out of the recent Austrian race because of an injury to his right hand.
