George Russell clinches an unexpected victory at the Austrian Grand Prix following a crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
In a surprising turn of events, George Russell secures a win in Austria after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collide late in the race.
SPIELBERG, AUSTRIA – A surprising last-minute crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris resulted in an unexpected win for George Russell at the Austrian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
During their fight for the top spot on Lap 64 at Turn 3, Verstappen and Norris collided following an unusually sluggish pit stop by the Red Bull team, resulting in both drivers sustaining damage and tire punctures.
Russell, who hadn't been in contention for the lead and was positioned in a distant third when the crash occurred, took advantage of the unfolding chaos to secure his second Formula 1 win.
Verstappen received a penalty of 10 seconds for being deemed responsible for the crash, yet he managed to secure a fifth-place finish, which allowed him to increase his lead in the world championship standings.
Norris experienced less luck and emerged more adversely affected from the encounter, leading to the McLaren driver's withdrawal from the race.
"Remarkable. It was quite a battle early on in the race just to maintain third place. I noticed Max and Lando pushing each other hard, and I was aware Lando was aiming for the victory," Russell commented.
The squad has performed exceptionally well to position us competitively. It's essential to be present to capitalize on opportunities, and that's exactly where we found ourselves.
Verstappen and Norris were really pushing their limits. It was astonishing to see how near we managed to get to Lando and Max. We were trailing by just around 12 seconds, and I was aware that a crash could happen. It's something you always imagine.
"Absolutely thrilled to return to the pinnacle of success. Since the season began, we've made significant progress. The recent races have been phenomenal. There's still more in store."
Oscar Piastri, his fellow team member, secured the runner-up position, surpassing Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who finished third, just before the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton faced a setback with a five-second penalty for violating the pit lane entry rules by crossing the white line.
Nico Hulkenberg managed to pass Sergio Perez's Red Bull towards the end, securing sixth place, while his Haas companion, Kevin Magnussen, finished eighth, earning a significant points boost for the American team.
Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull and Pierre Gasly of Alpine secured the ninth and tenth spots, respectively, closing out the top ten point earners ahead of Charles Leclerc. Leclerc's race was compromised early on due to an initial lap collision that damaged his Ferrari.
