A recently elected Labour MP has sent a letter to the government, urging a reevaluation of the means testing for winter fuel payments, according to Sky News.
Last month, Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that the general disbursement to pensioners, which ranges from £100 to £300, will now be limited to only those receiving pension credit, as part of an effort to save over £1 billion.
However, there are worries that retirees who barely exceed the eligibility limit for credits might be at risk.
Jessica Asato, who recently became the Labour MP for Lowestoft in July, has penned a letter to Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, urging for amendments to the current policy.
On the Sky News Daily podcast, Sam Coates, the deputy political editor for Sky News, revealed: "We at Sky are aware that Jessica Asato, a Labour MP, has reached out to Liz Kendall expressing her concerns about this particular policy."
He made it clear that they should consider changing it.
"Jess Asato aims to expand the eligibility for this benefit to include more individuals."

"She acknowledges that… it will be removed from some.
"However, she is worried about those individuals who barely fall short – they're not wealthy, yet they don't meet the criteria for Pension Credit."
"As a result, there's a significant decrease in their earnings just as the energy price cap is set to increase, which means that energy bills will also escalate this fall."
"That's why there are specific worries to consider.

Sky News Daily host and political correspondent Liz Bates highlighted the significance of a Labour MP voicing concerns so soon after beginning their tenure in parliament.
The text suggests that the government may face difficulties with its parliamentary party as the House of Commons reconvenes next week.

Caroline Flint, who served as a Labour MP from 1997 to 2019 and held ministerial roles during the New Labour era, also echoes Ms Asato's worries.
Ms. Flint has been appointed as the chairperson of the Fuel Poverty Committee.
In her correspondence with Miatta Fahnbulleh, the minister responsible for energy consumers, Ms. Flint expressed her concerns, stating: "We anticipate that the department will look into whether a substantial number of pensioners with limited and fixed incomes, who fall just outside the threshold set by the chancellor, are facing real difficulties." She specifically urged the government to evaluate how these policies affect pensioner households whose yearly incomes range from the Pension Credit threshold up to £18,200.
"Additionally, there are as many as 880,000 households that are not currently claiming Pension Credit, and past efforts to increase enrollment have not been notably effective."

Ms. Flint noted that women living alone in single-occupancy homes could face the most significant effects.
Ms. Asato stated, "I did send a letter last week, and I am extremely disappointed that it was leaked since it was meant to be confidential. However, I have since received reassurances."
The enormity of the legacy left by the Conservatives is appalling, and I, along with numerous others, am incensed that their actions have compelled us to make such difficult choices at this early stage in the parliamentary term.
"I am comforted by our commitment to maintaining the triple lock, which led to an increase of more than £800 in the state pension last year. Additionally, a pension increase that exceeds inflation will be declared during the budget, clearly considering the rising energy costs."
"I firmly believe that this is the correct decision and understand that it's one of many challenging choices we need to make to ensure economic stability, allowing us as Labour MPs to effectively serve our constituents."
Efforts have been made to contact the Department for Work and Pensions for a statement.
