As the weekend approached, speculation was rampant regarding Ricciardo's future. However, it is important to note that neither VCARB nor Red Bull had made any official statements.
Riccardo's final departure from Formula 1 was revealed about a week after the Singapore Grand Prix.
This implied that Ricciardo couldn't experience a typical farewell.
During the FIA press conference held in Austin, Mekies acknowledged that the situation was exasperating.
Mekies expressed that the situation was indeed exasperating and acknowledged that it was far from perfect for both the individual involved, in terms of his career and personal life, as well as for the entire team supporting him.
"Prior to the weekend, we engaged in conversations. Ultimately, for various reasons, we collectively decided not to make an announcement before the weekend. After that decision, we had to manage the situation as it unfolded."
Looking back, it's a choice we might reconsider, but at that moment, both the team and the drivers agreed to proceed with it.
Mekies believes that Ricciardo received a fantastic farewell nonetheless.
"In some form or another, we all managed to show just how much affection the sport and its fans have for Daniel," he stated. "I'm not sure if it could have been any better or worse."
"Undoubtedly distinct and more conventional. I hope to express that the love and compassion we experienced throughout that weekend was extraordinary and demonstrated that he transcends his role as an F1 driver. He is more significant than the sport itself."
