Quartararo Pushes to the Limit in Unexpected Bagnaia Battle at Aragon MotoGP Sprint
Fabio Quartararo was "pushing to his limits" during the Aragon MotoGP Sprint while competing against Pecco Bagnaia. Quartararo secured an eighth-place finish following an unexpected duel with Francesco Bagnaia.
A couple of years back, a race between Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo would have been a contest for the championship title. Although Bagnaia lost his lead in the points standings during the Aragon MotoGP Sprint, it was Jorge Martin who overtook him. Meanwhile, his competition with Quartararo was for the eighth position.
Yamaha's performance has dropped so much that it required Bagnaia's poorest Sprint of the season, at least among the ones he completed, and possibly Quartararo's strongest effort to bring them close to each other on the track.
“I had an excellent start,” Quartararo mentioned to MotoGP.com following the race. “I noticed several riders struggling with their grip ahead of me, so I seized the chance to capitalize on my strong start and perform at my best.”
"The speed at the front wasn't extremely high. We faced challenges throughout the weekend, but we managed to compete against top riders, including Pecco Bagnaia. It's been years since I raced so closely with him, even though he had one of the hardest sprint races of his season."
"However, we made the most of the chance to bring joy to both the people in the box and myself."
In order to compete with Bagnaia, Quartararo stated that he needed to push his Yamaha M1 to its maximum potential.
"I was definitely pushing to the edge," he stated. "I made several errors, and with Pecco [Bagnaia] ahead of me, he was setting a quick pace. I had a hard time trying to pass him, but I had a chance to attempt it on the final lap."
"It was a positive outcome, and we hope to continue this momentum into tomorrow."
Quartararo and Yamaha had implemented adjustments from Friday, yet Quartararo attributed his outcome more to the difficulties faced by his competitors than to his own advancement.
Quartararo commented, “It was evident in the qualifying that we were significantly behind. During the race, our speed didn't improve but remained consistent, while other riders seemed to face some difficulties. We made several errors, but we pushed ourselves to the limit and ultimately, today turned out to be enjoyable for us.”
Will Quartararo be able to achieve another top-10 finish in Sunday's full-length Grand Prix?
“We'll have to wait and see,” he mentioned. “It's a tricky situation. We need to thoroughly examine it because the front tire was severely damaged. But with any luck, we can still look forward to the race.”
