Quartararo Hails Marquez as MotoGP’s Greatest, Despite Idolizing Rossi: A Complex Tribute to Two Legends
Fabio Quartararo's choice for the greatest MotoGP rider of all time spells trouble for his hero, Valentino Rossi. Additionally, Quartararo shares his thoughts on taking over Valentino Rossi's spot.
Fabio Quartararo refers to Valentino Rossi as his "hero," yet he names Marc Marquez as the greatest MotoGP rider of all time.
Marquez is just one title away from equaling Rossi's impressive record of nine championships throughout his illustrious career.
His prospects of matching his competitor's record are expected to improve in 2025 and 2026 once he competes on the official Ducati, yet Quartararo feels his achievements to date already merit being called the greatest.
"Valentino is great, but in my opinion, Marc tops the list as the greatest of all time, despite having fewer championships to his name," Quartararo shared with TwoJeys.
"In 2014, he secured victories in the initial 10 contests. One might think, 'it's time to find out more about this individual…'"
"Whether it's raining, shining, windy, or facing challenging weather, he consistently demonstrates remarkable speed."
"He displays a lot of aggression. Perhaps I have a gentler approach. Observing him, it feels as though he's moving at a pace that's one and a half seconds quicker than yours."
Yet, Quartararo maintains Rossi as his role model.
"He mentioned that Rossi has always been his hero."
"I secured the championship the same year my hero stepped away from the sport. Therefore, I experienced numerous connections to the legend I admired."
In 2021, Rossi transitioned from Yamaha's main team to their subsidiary squad, marking his last season before retirement.
Quartararo emerged as the leading racer for the official Yamaha team.
"In 2021, we switched positions. It adds stress," he confessed.
"He was no longer part of the designated squad, and 15 reporters from Italy asked me, 'What's your plan now that you've stepped into the shoes of the king?'"
"That year, I succeeded in becoming the champion."
Since the age of five, Quartararo has looked up to Rossi as his idol.
"He mentioned it felt odd to encounter him and initially snap a picture."
At the age of 14 or 15, he extended an invitation to me to visit his ranch, and I was thrilled.
I asked, "Are we leaving at nine in the morning?" He replied, "No, at 1pm in the afternoon."
I rose from bed at 7 in the morning! He emerged from his slumber at noon! After eating, he departed.
Envision visiting the residence of someone you greatly admire. Following that, they extend an invitation to you annually. The entire experience was remarkable.
