Fabio Quartararo supports Augusto Fernandez for a testing position with Yamaha's MotoGP team
It appears Augusto Fernandez is on track to become part of Yamaha's larger MotoGP testing squad in 2025.
Fabio Quartararo is showing his support for Augusto Fernandez to take on a role as a test rider for Yamaha in the MotoGP circuit for the
Former Moto2 champion Fernandez faces an uncertain future in the premier class, as he won't be returning to Tech3 KTM next season.
At the same time, Yamaha is on the lookout for another test rider to team up with Cal Crutchlow, who is currently sidelined due to an
Recently, Yamaha World Superbike competitor and ex-MotoGP rider Remy Gardner stepped in to fill the shoes of Crutchlow for two MotoGP races. He took over from Alex Rins in Germany and also participated as a wild-card entry at the Silverstone circuit.
Gardner is eager to maintain his status as a permanent rider in WorldSBK for the upcoming year. "I've been advocating for a while now to get a test rider on board who has recent experience racing a MotoGP bike, someone who's truly ambitious," Quartararo was reported saying at the Red Bull Ring by Motomatters.com.
"From my perspective, it's evident that Augusto is a rider whom I've been supporting for several months now."
The 2021 global champion mentioned that Fernandez might leverage wild-card M1 chances to attempt and rejuvenate his MotoGP career.
"Quartararo mentioned, 'Definitely, if he's quick on the four Yamahas next year, he has the chance to make a comeback in the championship as well. Therefore, it's crucial to identify a rider who is truly motivated to return and provide valuable feedback.'"
Fernandez acknowledged that at first, he perceived the opportunity to become a test rider as akin to entering retirement. However, he now believes that taking on this role presents a more advantageous path to securing a MotoGP racing position than moving to WorldSBK.
"At first, I thought about retiring, right? But after some reflection, I realized that this was the perfect chance to re-enter the racing scene, rather than moving to World Superbike," stated the 26-year-old.
"My passion for Superbike runs deep since my beginnings were in that circuit… However, I'm not prepared to say goodbye to MotoGP just yet."
Aleix Espargaro reached the pinnacle of his career at a later age, similar to many other riders. Therefore, I am definitely not finished yet.
"I plan to approach the upcoming two years with a unique perspective, dedicating significant effort to reach a competitive level and earn my position."
"I'm making it clear to Yamaha that they should choose me since I'm deserving of the motorcycle due to my speed."
As of now, the Pramac Yamaha initiative hasn't disclosed its lineup of riders. However, Miguel Oliveira is anticipated to secure one of the spots, while Jack Miller emerges as a potential candidate for the remaining seat.
Quartararo and Alex Rins are set to remain with the Yamaha factory team.
