Quartararo and Yamaha Endure ‘Disastrous’ Austrian MotoGP: A Weekend to Forget
Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha describe Austrian MotoGP as "disastrous" and "a day to forget"
Following a long lap penalty, Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo finished 16th and his teammate placed 18th in the Austrian MotoGP.
Yamaha faced another challenging weekend at the Austrian MotoGP, with both of their riders failing to score any points.
Fabio Quartararo showed strong performance for Yamaha during the second free practice session, ending up in fifth position. His speed with worn tires appeared to be satisfactory.
Nevertheless, when equipped with fresh tires, Yamaha couldn't take advantage of the extra traction, leading to difficulties for both Quartararo and Alex Rins during qualifying and the initial phases of each race.
Quartararo's experience at the Grand Prix was further marred by a long lap penalty, and overall, he felt let down by Yamaha's performance over the weekend in Austria.
“It was undoubtedly a disappointing weekend for our team,” he remarked. “Our expectations were higher, particularly for today’s race. We ended up too distant from the leading competitors, so we must put in a lot of effort. We need improvements moving forward.”
Throughout the entire weekend, Alex Rins faced issues with the rear of his bike lifting, ultimately finishing the race in 16th place.
"It was an incredibly challenging race," remarked Rins. "Completing it was very difficult. Firstly, due to the hot weather, and secondly, because I had some issues with the bike."
"Today was a bit better than yesterday due to a minor tweak in the setup, but it remains challenging to keep the rear tire grounded. When the rear lifts, we have to rely on the front brakes, which can lead to some locking issues."
Rins found a silver lining as he finished his first race since his high-side at the Dutch TT. "I'm very proud of myself," he remarked. "I've shown that I can push through tough times with dedication and perseverance. Now, I'm eagerly anticipating the private test in Misano. I'm prepared to put in the effort."
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team manager Maio Meregalli had fewer reasons to be optimistic.
"It was a day of racing we'd rather not remember," he commented. "Today's race was a repeat of the challenges we faced in yesterday's Sprint race. We weren't prepared for such a tough weekend. Álex performed well in the intense conditions today, especially given his health."
Fabio started off well, but he couldn't maintain his position. The long-lap penalty ruined his opportunity to compete for points. Beyond that, there's not much else to comment on.
"We must identify the reasons behind this lackluster performance. The Aragon Grand Prix is approaching in two weeks, but before that, we have a private test session at Misano scheduled for next week."
"We plan to assess various components and, if the outcomes are favorable, we intend to deliver the parts directly to Aragon."
