Pedro Acosta’s Harrowing Escape After High-Speed Crash at Austrian MotoGP: A Rookie’s Trial by Fire
Pedro Acosta remarked, "The motorcycle veered off in a different direction while I was thrown the opposite way. It was quite the crash."
Pedro Acosta expressed relief, stating, "Thankfully, the motorcycle headed one way and I ended up going the opposite direction."
Pedro Acosta came out unscathed from a tumultuous Friday at the Austrian MotoGP, yet he faces the challenge of advancing through Qualifying 1, having not secured a position among the top ten.
The newcomer to MotoGP experienced three falls from his RC16, starting with a minor lowside at the Turn 2 chicane, quickly succeeded by a frightening crash that halted the session. This occurred when he braked at Turn 4, reaching speeds of 300km/h, towards the end of the morning.
"Speaking to MotoGP.com, Acosta explained, 'Honestly, the issue in Turn 2 was a cold tyre, as I was holding back for Pol who was trailing behind."
"After wiping out, I got the motorcycle running again and completed an entire circuit. Then I thought, 'Alright, if the tire has cooled down, I'll have the opportunity to heat it back up.'"
The one aspect that caught me off guard was the tire's core remaining chilly, since it was truly cold… And just when I applied the brake, I started to lose control of the front.
"Gratefully, the motorcycle veered off one way and I was propelled in another, considering its significant size."
"In any case, all was well."
The last mishap, once more a lowside, occurred during an out lap in the afternoon, with Acosta quickly getting up even before his motorcycle had come to a halt.
However, it eliminated the possibility of directly advancing to Q2.
"The GASGAS Tech3 competitor mentioned that riding with the hard front tire proved to be difficult, especially since an attempt during the FP2 session in the afternoon led to a crash in the out-lap. The incident was peculiar, and the rider expressed a need for more time to decipher the cause," said the racer.
"Today was marred by numerous setbacks due to accidents… However, if we stay composed and manage to find time to focus tomorrow, we're definitely going to improve."
Acosta aims to move forward in Qualifying 1 on Saturday morning, targeting a position among the top six in the qualifying round.
"To begin with, our goal is to advance to Q2 and secure a spot within the top two rows of the starting grid. I believe that both we and Pierer Mobility as a whole have the speed required to achieve positions in these leading rows."
Brad Binder stood out as the sole RC16 competitor to secure a direct spot in Q2, achieving fifth position on Friday.
