Pedro Acosta Survives High-Speed Crashes, Eyes Q2 Advancement at Austrian MotoGP
Pedro Acosta: 'The bike went one way, I went the other. It was a big crash'
Pedro Acosta: “Fortunately, the bike veered off in one direction while I ended up going the opposite way."
Pedro Acosta came out unscathed from an eventful Friday at the Austrian MotoGP. However, he will have to compete in Qualifying 1 as he did not secure a spot in the top ten.
The newcomer to MotoGP experienced three crashes on his RC16. Initially, he had a minor slide at the Turn 2 chicane. Shortly after, a more frightening crash at 300 km/h occurred when he applied the brakes at Turn 4, bringing the morning session to a halt.
"To be honest, in Turn 2 my tire was still cold since I was waiting for Pol who was behind," Acosta explained to MotoGP.com.
"I had an accident, then got back on the bike and completed a full lap. I thought to myself, 'Alright, if the tire is cold, I'll have enough time to heat it up.'"
"The one thing that caught me off guard was that the middle of the tire remained cold, as it was really chilly… When I applied the brake, the front started to slip."
“By the grace of God, the bike veered one way, and I went the opposite direction. It was quite large.”
"In any case, it all turned out fine."
The last incident, which was another lowside, occurred during an out lap in the afternoon. Acosta quickly stood up even before his bike had come to a halt.
However, it eliminated any immediate opportunities for Q2.
"The GASGAS Tech3 rider mentioned that it was challenging to ride with the hard front tire. He experienced difficulties during the afternoon session (FP2), where he crashed during the out-lap. He added that the crash was unusual and he still needs time to figure out the reasons behind it."
"Today was marked by significant delays due to crashes… However, if we stay composed and manage our time well tomorrow, we will definitely see improvements."
On Saturday morning, Acosta aims to progress through Qualifying 1 and secure a position within the top six during the qualifying session.
"Firstly, our goal is to advance to Q2 and secure a position in the first two rows of the starting grid. I believe both our team and Pierer Mobility have the speed needed to achieve this."
Brad Binder was the sole RC16 rider to secure a direct spot in Q2 by finishing in fifth place on Friday.
