Pecco Bagnaia Triumphs in Austrian MotoGP, Reclaims Championship Lead with Seventh Season Victory
Pecco Bagnaia triumphs in the Austrian MotoGP race to seize the championship lead
Francesco Bagnaia secured his seventh win of the season at the Austrian MotoGP event.
Francesco Bagnaia clinched the win at the Austrian MotoGP, marking his seventh Grand Prix triumph of the season and regaining the top spot in the championship standings.
In contrast to the Sprint, Jorge Martin initially led the race by taking the holeshot, but Bagnaia quickly moved ahead. By the second lap, Bagnaia was in the lead, and despite Martin staying close until the race's midpoint, he could not reclaim the top position.
Bagnaia secured the win with a margin of three seconds. This marked his third consecutive triumph at the Austrian Grand Prix and his second successive double victory at the Red Bull Ring, following his Sprint race win on Saturday.
Trailing Martin by five seconds was Enea Bastianini, who had moved up to third place by the third corner on the initial lap. However, unlike his performance at Silverstone, Bastianini lacked the late-race speed to compete with the leaders.
There was a six-second gap between Bastianini and Marc Marquez. Marquez, from Spain, faced an issue with his ride height device at the beginning of the race, resulting in a poor start. He then collided with Franco Morbidelli as they approached the first turn, dropping him to 14th position. Despite being the only racer to match Bagnaia's speed by the race's end and being significantly faster than both Bastianini and Martin, Marquez had lost too much time initially, and thus, his highest achievable position was fourth place.
Brad Binder emerged as the top KTM rider at their home Grand Prix, securing a fifth-place finish. He was followed by Marco Bezzecchi, who put in one of his strongest performances of the season to claim sixth place.
A fierce competition for seventh place among the factory Aprilia riders concluded with Maverick Vinales securing the spot. Meanwhile, Aleix Espargaro was overtaken by Franco Morbidelli, who finished the Sprint in third place but ultimately ended up ninth. Alex Marquez rounded out the top 10.
Fabio Di Giannantonio was unable to participate in the race due to a shoulder dislocation he sustained during Friday's practice session. The sole riders who did not finish the race were Luca Marini and Raul Fernandez. Jack Miller had an accident at the chicane in a duel with Marc Marquez, but he managed to remount his bike and ended the race in 19th place, just behind Fabio Quartararo, who had to complete a long lap penalty.
