Pecco Bagnaia Challenges Notion of GP24 Superiority Amid Development Discrepancies: ‘They Won’t Listen to Me
Pecco Bagnaia challenges the notion regarding GP24 versus GP23: "It feels a little odd"
"They're not going to heed my opinion, as everyone holds their own perspective"
Current MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia describes the progress the GP24 has made compared to the GP23 as "strange," especially considering that there hasn't been much development on the 2024 model.
In the past few years, Ducati's bikes from the previous year have consistently shown they can win races. Both Marco Bezzecchi in 2023 and Enea Bastianini in 2022 have competed for the world championship against the official factory teams.
After 10 rounds in the 2024 season, no year-old Ducati has secured a victory. Marc Marquez, riding a GP23, is the highest-placed Ducati rider in the championship, sitting in fourth place and trailing the points leader, Jorge Martin, by 62 points.
Following the British Grand Prix, Marquez acknowledged that he was losing four to five seconds per race to the GP24s. He conceded that on some tracks, there was an evident performance gap between the 2023 and 2024 Ducati models.
In anticipation of the Austrian Grand Prix, Bagnaia has responded to these claims by pointing out that the GP23 has undergone more development this year compared to the GP24.
"Regarding everything I plan to mention, no one will pay attention to me since everyone has their own opinion, and I am indifferent to it all," Bagnaia told DAZN.
"I've ridden both motorcycles, and the GP22 stands out as the most well-balanced of them all."
"It's somewhat odd that before Le Mans, the GP23 was consistently in contention for the win, but since then, we have consistently been lagging behind without making any progress."
"There haven't been any updates for us since the tests. Meanwhile, the GP23 has already gone through two or three updates since the start of the year."
"Ultimately, they are quite alike. I understand that no one will pay attention to what I'm saying, but this is the truth."
Ducati's general manager, Gigi Dall’Igna, recently announced that the company will persist in its efforts to advance the GP23.
