Pecco Bagnaia Calls Out Marc Marquez Over ‘Ridiculous’ Tow Tactics Amid Silverstone Showdown
Pecco Bagnaia accused of taking a jab at Marc Marquez over tow criticism
“It’s undoubtedly a jab at Marc, without a doubt…"
It has been suggested that Pecco Bagnaia's labeling of tow tactics as "ridiculous" was deliberately directed at Marc Marquez.
Marquez is one of the most notable riders who often looks for a slipstream during MotoGP qualifying, even though many others do the same.
Bagnaia expressed his frustration last weekend at Silverstone, stating, "We need to acknowledge that the current qualifying situation is rather absurd, with ten MotoGP riders deliberately slowing down to trail others."
Neil Hodgson from TNT Sports commented, "It's definitely a jab at Marc, without a doubt."
"He initiated it during his MotoGP days while riding for Honda."
Bagnaia and Marquez, currently competing against each other for the championship while riding different models of Ducati bikes, are set to join forces as teammates in the official team next year. This new dynamic has the potential to create significant tension.
At present, Bagnaia is upset with Marquez for trying to follow closely behind him to gain an advantage.
Sylvain Guintoli evaluated Marquez's performance during the Silverstone qualifying session, noting, "He was trying to get a slipstream. Usually, things fall into place for Marc."
"He’s quite skilled at finding the right spot on the track."
“Regrettably for him, it was unsuccessful. He remained trapped.
"He had a strong start and was keeping pace, but ended up getting held up by Marco Bezzecchi."
"You can't hold Bezzecchi responsible; he's attempting to complete his lap too!"
"Sadly for Marc, things didn't go as planned. He really required that assistance. It was a gamble worth attempting."
Hodgson explained that Marc was frustrated since Bezzecchi had already been overtaken by his teammate. Marc then entered the lengthy turn and slowed down.
"Sometimes things like this occur, right? I don't have anything against Marc; in fact, I'm a huge admirer. However, he frequently seeks slipstreams during qualifying sessions, and then he gets frustrated if another rider doesn't lead."
“You need to choose one or the other!”
Several MotoGP riders, such as Aleix Espargaro and Fabio di Giannantonio, shared Bagnaia's disapproval of using towing strategies.
Bagnaia expressed his frustration, saying, "We're the elite in our field. If we've reached this level, it's because we can handle things independently, and the current situation is quite absurd."
Hodgson responded by saying, "I concur with his viewpoint. He is attempting to convey a message."
"The main concern is safety. If a person is moving slowly, you could collide with the back of another rider."
"Especially in the smaller classes, the Moto2 and Moto3 racers closely observe every MotoGP session. They look up to these MotoGP riders as their idols. Therefore, it is crucial for the MotoGP riders to cease their current actions."
Ultimately, the decision rests with the stewards.
Can Simon Crafar bring about change?
Next year, former rider and present MotoGP commentator Simon Crafar will take over from Freddie Spencer as the head of Race Direction.
Riders have expressed their approval of his appointment to the leading position in stewardship.
Guintoli expressed that everyone is pleased about Simon’s selection and mentioned that Simon is thrilled to take on the role.
"It seems like he's going to be excellent."
Guintoli emphasized the need for new regulations to address the issue of towing. He stated that this should be one of Crafar's initial actions. "In fact, it should be implemented before the upcoming year," Guintoli added.
Guintoli proposed the idea of implementing a minimum time for each segment. According to him, riders should be required to stay within 110% or 120% of their quickest segment time. This rule would prevent them from reducing their speed significantly.
"The greatest risk on the track stems from the varying speeds. This is evident even at the highest levels due to these strategies."
"It establishes a poor precedent."
