Opportunity Missed: Joe Roberts Overlooked for MotoGP Move in Surprising Decision by Trackhouse
Surprise as US motorcyclist bypassed for MotoGP promotion
Joe Roberts, seen as an ideal candidate, faces exclusion, disappointing American fans
It has come as a surprise that Joe Roberts appears to have been overlooked for a transition to MotoGP.
The Aprilia satellite team, Trackhouse, which receives support from the US, was heavily rumored to integrate Moto2's American rising star Roberts into their lineup for the upcoming season.
However, they have officially announced the acquisition of his Japanese Moto2 competitor Ai Ogura, who will team up with Raul Fernandez.
Neil Hodgson shared with TNT Sport regarding Roberts, "Everyone assumed it was the perfect match."
The main concern regarding Roberts was his speed in this season's competitions. However, he has quelled those doubts by securing wins in races. Now, he's contending for the championship alongside Ogura.
"I'd rank Ogura ahead in terms of sheer pace. However, considering the business side of things broadly?
"Particularly for Trackhouse, a US-based team aiming for a unique approach, they plan to leverage social media to expand the sport's reach."
"It seems like a huge opportunity was overlooked! Roberts, with his charm and attractive California vibe, possesses all the qualities needed to promote the sport to a broader audience."
"Rather, Ogura has been your selection. He's slightly quicker on the circuit. In my view, it’s a lost chance."
Alex Lowes commented on Ogura, stating, "There's no denying he's earned it. He's a skilled rider who rightfully deserves a spot in MotoGP."
"Seeing someone with Joe's character, an American, returning to MotoGP would have been wonderful. I believe we all would have appreciated it, and it seemed logical. It's unfortunate."
Hodgson highlighted, "Among the 16 riders from Spain and Italy, there are only two who speak English, namely Jack Miller and Brad Binder."
Lowes responded, "It's important not to resent someone's chance. Ogura truly merits it based on his talent."
Hodgson cautioned that Trackhouse's decision to overlook Roberts might lead to a shortage of American competitors in MotoGP for the foreseeable future.
"Hodgson mentioned that Roberts is set to turn 28 the following year. He added that all the spots are filled, with the majority on contracts lasting two years."
"Thus, the absence of an American competitor in MotoGP extends for, what duration?"
"The scenario is similar for British competitors. Following Jake Dixon, who appears unlikely to receive an opportunity, there seems to be a lengthy period of anticipation."
Roberts holds the third position in the Moto2 rankings, while Ogura is right ahead in second place. Sergio Garcia is currently topping the championship leaderboard
Next year, MotoGP will welcome several Moto2 competitors into its ranks, including Ogura who is set to join Trackhouse, Fermin Aldeguer is expected to team up with Ducati, likely under the Gresini banner, and there are strong indications that Somkiat Chantra will be joining forces with LCR Honda.
However, it appears there won't be space for Roberts.
