Open Secret: Fermin Aldeguer’s Imminent Gresini Ducati Move for 2025 Season
"Common knowledge yet to be confirmed" marks the next significant phase in MotoGP rider transactions
While there's no formal announcement, Fermin Aldeguer's team for the 2025 MotoGP season is virtually guaranteed.
For an extended period, Fermin Aldeguer has held a position as a MotoGP rider for Ducati in 2025, but the specific team he will join remains unannounced.
Aldeguer, securing victories in the final four Moto2 Grand Prix races of the previous year, finalized a contract with Ducati prior to the commencement of this season, a decision that was made public in February.
From that point, Aldeguer, who was highly favored to win the Moto2 title in 2024, has found the season challenging, securing victories in just two races and presently holds the fifth position in the championship rankings, trailing the leader Sergio Garcia by 50 points. Garcia is set to continue with his existing team, MT Helmets MSI, into the next year. Aldeguer's performance hit a low during the Austrian race weekend, where he started in 17th place and ended up finishing 20th, marking his poorest showing of the
Nonetheless, the announcement of Franco Morbidelli joining the VR46 Ducati squad indicates that, despite the lack of formal confirmation, Aldeguer's future team is effectively assured.
Morbidelli has joined VR46, teaming up with Fabio Di Giannantonio, while the official Ducati team now comprises Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez. As the Pramac squad shifts its allegiance to Yamaha, leaving the Ducati fold, Gresini Racing, where Alex Marquez is signed, is the only option left for Aldeguer.
Six months after inking his deal, it appears that only the official declaration is pending.
Aldeguer mentioned that his future in MotoGP is an open secret, widely recognized by all.
"I'm thrilled about it. Currently, I'm unable to disclose any details, but perhaps in the near future, I can. And indeed, I'm extremely excited to be a part of the Gresini team, riding the 2024 Ducati. We'll discuss more about it next year, at a different time."
The Gresini squad is a team rich in heritage, having recently achieved notable victories thanks to Enea Bastianini in 2022, and Fabio Di Giannantonio in the previous year.
"Numerous cyclists join this squad because the technology aspect is excellent," Aldeguer noted. "However, that's for the upcoming year. Right now, my concentration is on the current year since it's crucial."
