Muddying the Waters: Remy Gardner Weighs in on Potential Yamaha MotoGP Test Rider Role Amid Superbike Success
Remy Gardner’s Opinion on Potential MotoGP Test Role for Yamaha
Is Remy Gardner considering a position as a test rider for Yamaha in MotoGP?
Remy Gardner believes that taking on the role of a full-time test rider for Yamaha's MotoGP team in 2025, while also competing in World Superbike, would create complications for everyone involved.
Yamaha enlisted the 2021 Moto2 world champion to fill in for the injured Alex Rins in Germany last month. Subsequently, he was also brought in to substitute for wildcard Cal Crutchlow on the test team during the British Grand Prix.
Gardner stepped in for Rins on Friday because Rins was still dealing with injuries. Gardner finished in last place in both races at Silverstone.
During a media session at Silverstone, including questions from Crash.net, Gardner was inquired about the possibility of taking on a MotoGP test rider position for Yamaha in addition to his current WSBK responsibilities. He responded, "I don't think so. I don't believe it's feasible to manage both roles."
"In my opinion, it would be self-sabotage because ultimately, it's an entirely different bicycle."
"I believe that with time I could perform just as well, but since it's a completely different bike, switching from one to another each week isn't the best way to concentrate on a single championship."
"In Donington, it took me five laps to find my rhythm, and we faced difficulties there."
“I don’t know whether that was the reason or not, but we’ll find out this weekend in Portimao. I enjoy racing on that track, so things should go well there.”
“It would certainly complicate matters and harm both their interests and mine. Therefore, I believe they need to choose one option or the other.”
After achieving podium finishes with GRT Yamaha in the World Superbike Championship this year, Gardner expresses that his main goal is to continue competing in races rather than focusing on testing.
He said, "At 26, I'm still young and full of passion."
"A few weeks back, I achieved my first podium finish in almost two years, and now I’m eager for more."
"I finished fourth in Most, and it was heartbreaking. I'm eager and determined to reach those podium finishes."
"I enjoy racing and competing, and I believe I have the potential to contend for a championship someday. As a racer, it seems I might need to commit to a complete season here. We'll find out."
Yamaha has open spots on the 2025 MotoGP team at Pramac, and it seems probable that Miguel Oliveira will take one of these seats. Several Moto2 riders have been considered for the remaining position.
