MotoGP Drama: Jorge Martin Weighs in on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances in the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, whereas Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, continuing his streak of finishing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia made his way up through the pack and caught up to Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, but they collided, causing both riders to crash at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident that he was hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Undoubtedly, visibility was challenging due to the significant amount of dust in that area. This likely prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to Joe Roberts' experience in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap during a duel with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. Fingers crossed they'll be good to go for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The MotoGP World Championship continues this weekend with the San Marino Grand Prix, held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, and this year he faces a similar situation, having only one week to recover after the Aragon Grand Prix to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both events in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider enters his opponent's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
