Morbidelli and Marquez Tangle in Austrian GP: A Turn 1 Drama Unfolds
Franco Morbidelli regarding the incident with Marc Marquez: "As I was maneuvering past, he moved to the left, leading us to collide."
The incident involving Marc Marquez's front holeshot device led to a collision with Franco Morbidelli at the first turn of Sunday's Austrian MotoGP race.
Without gaining speed, Marquez quickly fell from third place to sixth, as Morbidelli also attempted to navigate past the Gresini competitor.
However, the opening Morbidelli targeted, situated between Aleix Espargaro and Marquez, abruptly closed, resulting in a collision between the two that forced them off course.
Marquez returned to the race in 13th position, while Morbidelli fell back to 18th.
"Upon entering Turn 1, it appeared Marc encountered an issue. It seems like he failed to activate the front mechanism or something along those lines, which resulted in a varying speed,” Morbidelli explained.
"He moved to the left while I was passing by, and we ended up getting entangled."
"In the end, everything remained the same, and I'm pleased with this outcome."
In a competition with scant passing maneuvers, Marquez climbed up nine spots by the time he reached the finish line, while Morbidelli made up ten spots.
"Coming back from 18th position was challenging. Passing others on this track is tough," Morbidelli explained.
The pressure in the front tire significantly increased, leading to a notable drop in overall performance. However, we managed to climb our way back to eighth position, making it a successful race for us in the end.
In MotoGP, surpassing competitors is increasingly challenging as the performance gap among motorcycles during straight sprints narrows. Additionally, riders can brake later and more effectively, thanks to the ride height adjustment mechanisms on their bikes.
"However, today I managed to move up ten spots. Similarly, in France, I advanced by ten or eleven spots. So, it's still achievable."
"I'm pleased with our pace and the emotions I went through. I aim to achieve better qualifying positions in Aragon and the upcoming events."
