Missed Opportunity: Analyzing Marc Marquez’s Potential Finish Without Turn 1 Drama in Austrian MotoGP
How would Marc Marquez have placed if there hadn't been chaos at Turn 1 in the Austrian MotoGP?
'Marquez managed an impressive recovery to secure fourth place, leaving us to wonder about the potential outcome.'
After experiencing issues with his holeshot device and a collision with Franco Morbidelli at the first turn, Marc Marquez managed to climb from 13th to finish in fourth place in Sunday's Austrian MotoGP, offering the primary excitement in an otherwise uneventful race.
How might the Gresini Ducati racer, who secured a front-row start and called the Red Bull Ring one of his best weekends, have placed if he had steered clear of the initial chaos?
In the most recent episode of the Crash.net MotoGP podcast, Jordan Moreland, the host, mentioned:
Marquez performed well during the Sprint race, maintaining second place and reducing Bagnaia’s advantage to roughly 1.1 seconds before making an error and crashing.
"On Sunday, he experienced pre-race chaos, followed by a collision with Morbidelli, which caused him to fall back to 13th place."
"He managed to make an impressive recovery to finish in fourth place. It's a case of missed opportunities since he showed excellent speed when he had a clear track ahead. He was practically keeping pace with Bagnaia."
MotoGP journalist Lewis Duncan commented: “It was a bit of bad luck. He performed exceptionally well, particularly given the situation since his tyre pressures were adjusted for a different race.
"He was battling through the situation, likely with tires that had significantly higher pressure. Given that he had already crashed during the Sprint, I imagine that incident was still on his mind."
"I believe that Marc's race was more precarious than it might have appeared on TV."
It's difficult to predict what might have occurred without the incident at Turn 1. On average, his speed was the fourth fastest, but it's important to note that he spent a significant amount of time passing other cars.
"It's challenging to determine Marquez's potential position. He likely could have competed with Bastianini for a spot on the podium, as their speeds were comparable. However, whether he could have closed that gap remains uncertain."
"While Marc certainly had a chance to do better, his performance to secure fourth place stands out as one of his stronger efforts this season."
Moreland remarked that it was evident he was somewhat frustrated about not securing two podium finishes.
He mentioned the Catalunya race, noting it was a tough weekend for him, yet he managed to secure second place in the Sprint and third in the Grand Prix. On the other hand, Austria was a positive weekend, but he didn't come away with any rewards.
"Is Marquez's performance this season inconsistent?"
Crash.net MotoGP editor Pete McLaren stated that he believes the rider should seize any opportunity to secure a victory with his GP23. Marquez had the option to play it safe and finish second in the Sprint, but he noticed an opening to overtake Bagnaia and decided to take the risk.
"It didn't work out, but for him, what's another runner-up finish in a Sprint?"
The primary Grand Prix is particularly disappointing because it was one of his strongest weekends, and it would have been fascinating to see his performance if he had started among the top three.
However, I highly doubt he would have willingly given up a certain victory for Ducati in Sunday’s race. To put things in context, Pecco was performing exceptionally, Martin is currently in peak form, and Bastianini is also an extremely formidable competitor on the GP24.
Therefore, I don't view it as Marquez squandering a win, but it was undoubtedly a lost chance – likely, as Lewis mentioned, to compete with Bastianini for the last spot on the podium. It might have been slightly better, but it's uncertain.
