Mike Trimby: Celebrated as the First Non-Rider Inducted as MotoGP Legend at Silverstone
Mike Trimby honored as a MotoGP Legend at Silverstone
The late Mike Trimby is the inaugural non-rider to receive the MotoGP Legend status.
Mike Trimby, who established and led the IRTA as CEO, passed away during the Misano event last September. He has now become the first individual who was not a rider to be honored as a MotoGP Legend.
An official event filled to capacity on Friday at the British MotoGP featured Dorna's CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Mike's spouse Irene, and IRTA's Tony Congram as the main speakers.
Trimby stood out as a highly influential and esteemed personality in the world of motorcycle grand prix racing.
In 1982, Trimby was requested to advocate for riders regarding safety enhancements. He subsequently headed the International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA) for more than 40 years, managing the coordination of riders, teams, paddocks, grids, and facilities at every MotoGP event.
"This is an incredibly significant occasion for me," expressed Ezpeleta. "Mike is the first individual who isn't a rider to be inducted into the MotoGP Legends. Much of what MotoGP represents today is thanks to the contributions of Mike Trimby."
"I first encountered him several years back when he was advocating for the riders, even prior to his involvement with IRTA. At that time, I was serving as the director of the Jarama Circuit. I recall him putting in an extraordinary amount of effort."
"Frankly, at that time, representing the riders was viewed as unusual and wasn't well received by, let's say, the officials."
Mike persisted in his efforts and, with the establishment of IRTA, focused on enhancing the crucial aspect of rider safety.
"He played a vital role in our success, and I am certain that we wouldn't be in our current position without Mike's contributions."
"In 1991, when we began and formalized the agreement between IRTA, FIM, and Dorna, Mike was initially not particularly pleased. However, through our collaboration, we ultimately accomplished what we have today."
"This is an incredibly emotional moment for me. It’s not just about representing the championship's views on Mike as the CEO of Dorna. It's also because we have become extremely close friends."
"I really enjoyed interacting with him. He consistently showcased a classic British sense of humor! Honestly, it was quite challenging to communicate at first!"
The moment we received the news in Misano about Mike’s passing was extremely emotional.
"At this moment, with Irene present, I believe it is appropriate to publicly acknowledge the significant impact Mike Trimby has had on all of us."
“I am very pleased to declare him a MotoGP Legend because the current state of MotoGP owes a great deal to Mike Trimby.”
