Mike Trimby: A True MotoGP Legend – Honoring the First Non-Rider Inductee at Silverstone Ceremony
Mike Trimby honored with MotoGP Legend status at Silverstone
Mike Trimby, who has passed away, is the inaugural non-racer to receive the MotoGP Legend accolade.
Mike Trimby, the creator and chief executive of IRTA, who died in the course of last September's Misano event, has been honored as the first individual who is not a racer to be inducted into the MotoGP Legends.
On Friday, during the British MotoGP, the official ceremony saw a full audience and was prominently featured by Dorna's CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Mike's spouse Irene, and IRTA's Tony Congram.
Trimby stood out as a highly esteemed and influential personality within the world of motorcycle grand prix racing.
In 1982, following a request to advocate for enhanced safety measures on behalf of riders, Trimby took the helm of the International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA), steering the organization for more than 40 years. He was instrumental in coordinating the efforts of riders and teams, as well as managing the paddock, grid, and facilities at every MotoGP event.
"Ezpeleta expressed, "This is an incredibly significant occasion for me. Mike marks the inaugural non-rider to be inducted into the MotoGP Legends. Much of MotoGP's current success can be attributed to Mike Trimby."
I first encountered him several years back when he was advocating on behalf of the riders, even prior to his involvement with IRTA. At that time, I was overseeing operations at the Jarama Circuit. It struck me how incredibly hard he worked.
Frankly, at that time, representing the riders was seen as odd and not exactly embraced by, for lack of a better term, the officials.
Mike persisted in his efforts, and with the establishment of IRTA, he dedicated himself to enhancing the most crucial aspect: the riders' safety.
"Mike played a pivotal role in this, and I'm convinced that without him, our current situation would be markedly different."
Subsequently, after our inception in 1991, with the formalization of the pact among IRTA, FIM, and Dorna, to speak candidly, Mike didn't exactly welcome this development with open arms. However, by collaboratively putting in the effort, we managed to accomplish the success we enjoy today.
"For me, this is a deeply moving occasion. It's not merely because I, as the CEO of Dorna, am expressing the championship's sentiments towards Mike, it's because we grew to be incredibly close friends."
I greatly enjoyed interacting with him. His humor was quintessentially British! Truthfully, at first, we found it challenging to communicate effectively!
"The atmosphere was charged with emotion upon receiving the news in Misano about Mike's passing."
With Irene joining us today, I believe it's only appropriate to demonstrate to everyone just how significant Mike Trimby's role has been in our lives.
"I'm thrilled to declare him a MotoGP Legend, as truly, the current state of MotoGP owes much to Mike Trimby."
