Midnight Insights Lead Enea Bastianini to Victory Lane at Emilia Romagna MotoGP
Bastianini shares insights on his late-night breakthrough leading to a win at Misano
Bastianini details his improvement in performance for the Emilia Romagna MotoGP event
Enea Bastianini mentioned that he spent time until 10pm in his garage, analyzing data to keep up with the front runners' speed for the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
During Friday and Saturday's events at Misano, Bastianini appeared to be in contention for the last podium position, while his teammate Francesco Bagnaia and Pramac's Jorge Martin seemed to have a distinct lead.
After securing third place in the sprint, Bastianini aggressively pursued the win in Sunday's race right from the start, ultimately clinching Ducati's 100th Grand Prix win following a contentious overtake on Martin during the final lap.
"Bastianini remarked, 'It indeed was an extraordinary Sunday.'"
"Yesterday was a busy day for me. By 10pm, I found myself in my space, poring over my information to stay ahead in the competition today.
Ultimately, during the warm-up this morning, I felt quite confident. This sense of assurance carried over into the race as well.
In the final moments, Jorge consistently exerted effort throughout the race, showcasing excellent skills and numerous strengths. During the final lap, I noticed a slight opening at Turn 4 and immediately took the opportunity to move inside.
"He tightened the track significantly, causing me to apply the brakes harder than I anticipated. Despite this, I managed to cross the finish line first and secured the victory."
Bastianini maintained that his maneuver to pass Martin was aggressive yet complied with the regulations, arguing he pushed the boundaries without breaking them. The officials chose not to look into the matter further.
The Italian rider is recognized for his skill in preserving his tyres, which typically gives him an advantage during the latter stages of races. However, he believes that the pace at the Emilia Romagna GP didn't enable him to utilize this strength.
"He mentioned that preserving the tyres was challenging as they had been pushing the pace from the start to the finish."
"Witnessing the speed of the race is truly amazing. Jorge really gave it his all while leading the way. Typically, in the battle for first place, you have a bit more to give in the final lap, and that's exactly what I attempted."
He further mentioned that the increased wind on Sunday provided him with an advantage, enabling him to navigate Misano's high-speed turns more swiftly.
He mentioned, "Similarly, in 2022, I aimed for victory, but during my attempt to overtake Jorge at that very turn, I erred, veering off course, which cost me the opportunity to clinch the race," he explained.
"Taking the inside lane on the final lap was a considerable gamble. Misano always offers me that extra something.
"I'm uncertain whether it's the environment, the familial aspect, or my fondness for the circuit; we spend a great deal of time practicing here."
"Today, the breeze was an ally, especially in the quicker bends – such as Turns 11 and 12 – making entry smoother than during the sprint."
