Mid-Season MotoGP Manufacturer Rankings Revealed: Ducati Dominates as Honda Struggles Continue
Evaluating: All MotoGP Teams Midway Through 2024
We assess each MotoGP team with a score up to 10, marking the season's midpoint in 2024.
The UK MotoGP this past weekend was the halfway point, serving as the 10th event in a series of 20 races scheduled for 202
At the mid-point, we have evaluated which manufacturers meet the expected standards.
The updated regulations for concessions this year have provided Honda and Yamaha, who have been facing challenges, a better chance to advance their projects and accelerate their recovery.
However, Ducati, boasting the highest number of riders in the competition, continues to lead.
Could Ducati's main rivals hold an unexpected twist?
As we kick off the latter part of the 2024 season, we evaluate how the different manufacturers have performed up to this point.
The grading was determined by considering not only the outcomes but also factors like bike specifications and anticipated performances.
Ducati – Rating: A+
The dominance Ducati has shown on the track, partly due to its significant presence in the lineup, has been a prime example of its status as the benchmark in MotoGP for the 2024 season.
Securing the leading four positions in the rankings and claiming victory in almost every grand prix, except one out of the first 10, along with seven sprint races, makes it exceedingly unlikely for others to surpass Ducati for the rest of 2024.
Elevating its reputation, Gigi Dall'Igna has outdone expectations by making significant advancements with the GP24, demonstrating that Ducati does not entertain the idea of complacency.
Aprilia – Evaluation: B-
Aprilia earns recognition as the sole brand to outperform Ducati in race victories during 2024, with Maverick Vinales leading the charge with a sprint win in Portugal and a grand prix triumph in the United States, complemented by Aleix Espargaro's Saturday victory in Barcelona.
However, it evidently hasn't achieved the progress with Ducati that last year's performance hinted at, and midway through, it seems to be regressing.
Aprilia faces a tight timeline to adjust its strategy as a significant portion of its team departs by the end of 2024, necessitating the development of a competitive 2025 lineup with a new group of riders.
KTM – Rating: C
Out of deference to KTM, the reason its rating as a manufacturer stands at this level is largely due to Pedro Acosta's exceptional performance and Brad Binder's reliability.
Achieving only a few podium finishes falls short of the anticipated outcomes for a team that nearly clinched grand prix wins in 2023 and secured some sprint race victories.
In light of the season's initial phase, KTM is counting on Acosta and Binder to achieve high-level performances, yet it must intensify its efforts in development across the remaining 10 rounds.
Yamaha – Assessment: D+
Yamaha's performance in 2024 hasn't been particularly noteworthy, but the adjustments in its team structure and a shift in its approach to motorcycle innovation are beginning to yield encouraging results.
Fabio Quartararo's exceptional pace has likely contributed to the M1 appearing slightly more impressive than it truly is.
The pace of progress has been steady, and it's impressive that Yamaha has achieved this with just two motorcycles in the competition.
Honda – Rating: F
Currently, all the successes Yamaha is experiencing seem to be eluding Honda entirely.
Despite having talented riders like Johann Zarco and Joan Mir, who are capable of achieving higher finishes if the motorcycle performs well, HRC has struggled to make significant advancements in improving its standings.
In contrast to Yamaha, which tends to take more risks with the components it adds to its motorcycle—a strategy that hasn't consistently benefited its riders—Honda continues to err on the side of caution.
The possibility of kicking off 2025 on a positive note largely depends on Honda achieving significant advancements in the last 10 races.
