Mid-Season MotoGP Manufacturer Rankings: Ducati Dominates, Honda Struggles, and Surprise Contenders Emerge
Mid-Season 2024 MotoGP Manufacturer Rankings
We rate each MotoGP manufacturer out of 10 at the halfway point of 2024.
The British MotoGP held last weekend was the 10th event in the 20-race schedule for 2024.
At the midpoint of our evaluation, we have assessed which manufacturers meet the required standards.
The recently updated concession regulations have provided Honda and Yamaha, who have been facing difficulties, with an improved chance to advance their projects and accelerate their recovery.
However, Ducati, with the highest number of riders participating, continues to lead.
Could Ducati's nearest rivals possibly hold an unexpected twist?
With the start of the second half of the 2024 season, we evaluate the performance of the manufacturers up to this point.
We determined the grade by considering both the results and mitigating factors like the bike specifications and initial expectations.
Ducati – Rating: A+
Although Ducati's dominance in the field has contributed to its success, its performance in 2024 has exemplified why it is considered the benchmark in MotoGP.
Securing the top four positions in the rankings, clinching victory in all but one of the first 10 grand prix races, and triumphing in seven sprints, it will be nearly unachievable for others to surpass Ducati for the rest of 2024.
Enhancing its reputation, Gigi Dall’Igna has exceeded expectations with the GP24, proving that complacency is not a part of Ducati’s mindset.
Aprilia – Rating: B-
Aprilia stands out as the sole manufacturer to have outperformed Ducati in terms of race victories in 2024. This is attributed to Maverick Vinales' sprint race win in Portugal and his grand prix triumph in America, along with Aleix Espargaro's Saturday victory in Barcelona.
However, it evidently hasn't achieved the progress that Ducati's performance from last year indicated, and at the midpoint, it seems to be regressing.
As many of its current riders are set to depart by the close of 2024, Aprilia is running out of time to make necessary adjustments before focusing on creating a strong 2025 lineup with new talent.
KTM – Rating: C
Respectfully, KTM's overall rating as a manufacturer is elevated primarily due to Pedro Acosta's exceptional performance and Brad Binder's steady results.
A few podium finishes fall short of what one would anticipate from a manufacturer that nearly clinched grand prix wins in 2023 and secured a couple of sprint race victories.
According to the performance seen in the first half of the season, KTM is counting on Acosta and Binder to achieve top-notch results. However, the team must intensify its development efforts over the last 10 rounds.
Yamaha – Grade: D+
In 2024, Yamaha hasn't had many standout moments, but the company is making progress with staff changes and a shift in its approach to motorcycle development.
Fabio Quartararo's exceptional speed, characteristic of a champion, has likely contributed to the M1 appearing more impressive than it truly is.
However, the progress has been steady, and it's impressive that Yamaha has achieved this with just two motorcycles competing.
Honda – Rating: F
Honda seems to be missing the mark in areas where Yamaha is currently excelling.
Despite having highly skilled riders like Johann Zarco and Joan Mir, who are capable of achieving better results given a more competitive bike, HRC has struggled to make significant improvements in advancing its standings.
While Yamaha has taken more risks with the features it includes in its bikes, sometimes to the detriment of its riders, Honda continues to be overly cautious.
The possibility of beginning 2025 on a positive note depends largely on Honda achieving significant improvements in the last 10 races.
