Mercedes Escalates Probe into ‘Sabotage’ Email Allegations with Private Investigators After Police Clearance
Mercedes enlists private detectives amid escalating 'sabotage' email controversy
Following police determination of no criminal activity, Mercedes progresses with measures to address the situation
Mercedes has employed the services of private detectives to track down the origin of emails that allege they are undermining Lewis Hamilton, according to Crash.net's sources.
Following confirmation from Northamptonshire Police that no criminal activities were involved, after Mercedes brought forward complaints about anonymous emails, the Formula 1 team is moving forward by employing private detectives.
Toto Wolff has openly expressed his anger regarding the confidential messages that have been made public.
The communications alleged that Mercedes was undermining Hamilton's season – and potentially putting him at risk – and appeared to come from someone within the F1 team.
The assertion implied that Mercedes was giving preferential treatment to George Russell over Lewis Hamilton due to rumors of Hamilton's impending switch to Ferrari in the upcoming year.
Wolff has made it clear that the emails did not originate from a member of the Mercedes team.
He labeled the person who dispatched the email as a "conspiracy theorist" and a "madman."
Wolff mentioned, “Receiving such a large volume of emails, especially when they involve discussions of death and similar subjects, is distressing."
Last week in Barcelona, the head of Mercedes emphatically stated his intention not to let this issue rest.
"He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation by the police, including tracking down the IP address and phone number, to put an end to online harassment of this nature."
Individuals shouldn't use their smartphones or computers as shields to mistreat teams or drivers in such a manner.
Mercedes initially alerted law enforcement about the issue, leading to an announcement from the authorities: “On June 12, Northamptonshire Police were informed about an email that was distributed among members of the Mercedes AMG F1 team.
"An investigation revealed no evidence of criminal activity. Nonetheless, guidance was provided on how to handle any additional emails that may be received by the team."
Mercedes now plans to address the issue by employing private detectives.
Hamilton speaks out against 'negativity'
Last week in Spain, Hamilton stood up for his teammate Russell, addressing the online harassment he faced.
"Hamilton mentioned that he was completely unaware of George facing any negative situations."
George has consistently given his all every weekend, performing excellently for the team, making him beyond reproach.
Naturally, there's always room for improvement within a team, and this is achieved through ongoing dialogue and communication, which is something we're continually striving to enhance.
"However, we're all in this together, striving side by side, and we all aim to end on a positive note. We owe it to our enduring partnership."
Before the recent race in Barcelona, Hamilton had managed to qualify ahead of Russell just once in the first nine races of the season.
Strangely enough, he had previously stated that he didn't anticipate outperforming his teammate in qualifications this season.
Sky Sports in Barcelona inquired whether Wolff believes the qualifying competition among his team's drivers will fluctuate and whether Hamilton will feel invigorated by the enhancements to the W15.
Wolff replied, "I believe he's always been full of energy. The differences are incredibly small."
"It has the ability to move either way."
"I'm pleased that things turned out well for him [on Saturday]."
