McLaren’s Zak Brown Eyes F1 Title Race Opportunity Amid Red Bull’s Single-Handed Dominance
Zak Brown sees a chance for McLaren in the F1 championship battle: "I believe we all misjudged that"
Zak Brown has pinpointed a crucial vulnerability in Red Bull's championship aspirations in F1.
Zak Brown has encouraged McLaren to take advantage of Red Bull's situation, with only one of their cars earning significant points due to Sergio Perez's ongoing poor performance, highlighted at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Perez's challenging streak persisted into Sunday's race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where he ended up in eighth place.
Red Bull emerged from the Spanish race with the highest points tally, thanks to Max Verstappen's victory.
Nonetheless, owing to Perez's inconsistent showings, Verstappen has a larger advantage in the drivers' championship than Red Bull does in the team standings.
Brown believes McLaren has a chance to narrow the gap, a prospect that seemed entirely out of reach following the initial race in Bahrain.
"Brown informed Sky Sports that they managed to make a slight impact on Ferrari, while Mercedes scored some points against us."
"Ferrari is certainly achievable, but Mercedes and Red Bull are also in contention, especially if Perez accelerates his performance, making them tough competitors."
"Therefore, it seems we should capitalize on the current situation, with Max leading and Sergio securing a position within the points. This could provide us with an opportunity to narrow down the lead somewhat."
"The belief that everything had concluded after the initial race, it seems we were all mistaken in that assumption."
A year ago, McLaren dramatically improved their performance thanks to a major upgrade introduced in Austria.
From that point onwards, McLaren has regularly been in contention for podium finishes or even race victories.
Brown is enthusiastic about McLaren's prospects with four races scheduled over the next five weeks.
"He expressed his eagerness for numerous races, stating that, in his opinion, the more races, the better."
"We must continue on our current path. I believe Andrea [Stella] provides excellent guidance for the team.
"Our attention is highly concentrated. We're approaching this one race at a time. Naturally, our thoughts do extend further, especially regarding development aspects. However, our current focus shifts to Austria, and we're not concerning ourselves with Silverstone, aside from the ongoing work by our team back at the factory who are constantly working on improving the car."
