Max Bartolini outlines the distinctions between Ducati and Yamaha

Max Bartolini has shared his vision for incorporating Ducati's approach into Yamaha's strategy.

Bartolini concluded two decades of partnership with Ducati to take on the role of technical director at Yamaha.

He plays a pivotal role in helping the Japanese manufacturer recover from their current slump.

Bartolini shared with Motosprint one quality he aims to transfer from Ducati to Yamaha: “Beyond the expertise; it's the relentless pursuit, the effort to accelerate and enhance, even via minor details.

"Learning and enhancing: these are the primary forces propelling Ducati currently, potentially setting it apart from competitors."

"I arrived at the concept of blending two different work methodologies."

"Yamaha is known for its array of highly favorable attributes, and Ducati shares this reputation, with notable qualities such as speed, responsiveness, and creativity."

"Combining elements from both cultures over a period might yield the finest aspects of each."

Bartolini mentioned regarding Yamaha's present MotoGP motorcycle: "The foundational mechanics of the bike are fairly solid, though we might have been somewhat stagnant on certain aspects.

"Conversely, at Ducati, there existed an alternate possibility and the framework was largely in place, with Gigi Dall'Igna skillfully guiding it towards the correct path."

"Without his contribution, it might have been unachievable."

Bartolini mentioned regarding transformations at Yamaha: "We're altering our working methods, mindset, and strategies, and this is what consumes the most time.

Yamaha's strategy is influenced by a different cultural background, tending towards a more cautious and deliberate pace.

The adage accurately reflects that the Japanese carefully consider something ten times prior to taking action, in contrast to us who tend to act more impulsively.

"The shift in mindset appears to be the most effective and significant aspect, in my opinion."

Bartolini added, "I've never witnessed a corporation of this magnitude.

In Iwata, they're considered titans, with the racing scene being more homogenous compared to that of Ducati.

"In Borgo Panigale, the racing division stood at the center of all operations, whereas Yamaha is fundamentally a production-oriented company, and I can tell you, it's quite intimidating."

Yamaha's MotoGP initiative started to decline following Fabio Quartararo's championship win in 2021, as he struggled to match Ducati's performance in the subsequent year.

However, they've secured the Pramac satellite team, expanding their presence to four motorcycles on the grid by 2025.

They are also planning to switch back to a V4 engine, a move that won't bring immediate results, but indicates a promising outlook for the once dominant force.
