Maverick Vinales Tackles Front Tyre Loading Challenge to Boost Aprilia’s Braking Performance in MotoGP
Maverick Vinales expressed the need for his team to grasp the technique of applying pressure on the front tire, stating, "The Ducatis have an effortless way of executing a stoppie when they hit the brakes… It's crucial for us to figure out the method to effectively pressurize the front tire as I believe that's the main strategy."
Finishing 13th in the Saturday Sprint, Maverick Vinales managed to outperform his team-mate Aleix Espargaro, securing the position of the leading Aprilia rider in the Sunday Austrian MotoGP.
Securing the seventh spot, trailing behind five Ducatis and one KTM, highlighted the necessity for enhanced braking capabilities in the RS-GP.
Vinales believes his disadvantage lies in braking in a straight line and suggests that the rear downforce of the Aprilia might be contributing to the issue.
The Spanish rider is of the opinion that when its riders apply the brakes, the Ducati is exerting significantly more pressure on the front tire, in a manner akin to performing a stoppie.
"On this type of circuit, where braking is key, we're finding it somewhat challenging," stated Vinales.
"There are specific aspects where we excelled, but it's clear that enhancing our braking capabilities, particularly when the bike is upright, is necessary."
He further stated, "I believe it hinges on the method of applying pressure on the front tire, indicating that we might still not be applying it appropriately."
"When observing Ducatis, they consistently exhibit a lot of movement at the back, allowing them to effortlessly execute a stoppie when they apply the brakes."
"It appears that when you apply the brakes on our bike, the downward force continuously presses towards the ground, without transferring [to the front]. We're currently investigating whether this is the issue."
"During the warm-up, my focus was on getting the bike to shift all its weight onto the front, causing the back to lift, but it just wasn't happening. Now, we have to figure out how to properly engage the front tyre since I believe that's crucial."
Luckily for Aprilia, this weekend’s race at Aragon will not place as much emphasis on direct-line braking. Vinales mentioned that the main focus is to comprehend the traction levels on the newly laid track surface.
"Aragon presents a distinct circuit where grasping the grip level is essential," he detailed. "Due to the recent pavement, evaluating the conditions meticulously will be necessary.
"I believe this circuit presents a great opportunity for us to excel. Our team is extremely motivated and committed to giving our all."
Espargaro's performance with the RS-GP at Aragon has previously showcased its capabilities, sharing the podium with Ducati competitors Enea Bastianini and Francesco Bagnaia during the latest event in 2022.
Espargaro aims to conclude his career on a positive note at a track he holds in high regard as he retires after this season.
"Espargaro mentioned, 'This circuit holds a special place in my heart as it's where I secured my inaugural MotoGP podium finish. With the track being resurfaced this year, it'll be fascinating to see how the conditions have changed.'"
"The outlook is positive as we previously achieved a podium finish at this location with Aprilia. I'm eager to hit the circuit and face my final Aragón Grand Prix."
