Martin Extends Championship Advantage with Commanding Sprint Victory at Phillip Island
Jorge Martin increased his lead in the MotoGP championship standings by taking a commanding victory in the Australian Grand Prix sprint, finishing ahead of Marc Marquez, with Francesco Bagnaia trailing in fourth place.
After dominating the competition to secure the top spot in the qualifying rounds earlier on Saturday, Martin turned that advantage into a significant win in the sprint race, marking his first triumph since the San Marino Grand Prix.

Martin maintained the lead throughout the entire race and, at one point, had a gap of more than three seconds ahead of the competition. As the race neared its conclusion, he reduced his pace but still finished 1.520 seconds ahead of Marc Marquez, with Marquez trailing behind
Marquez made a comeback after initially veering off course at Turn 1 during the first lap, which caused him to fall to eighth place. He then powered through to finish in second. Meanwhile, Enea Bastianini added to the woes of his factory Ducati teammate, Bagnaia, by overtaking him to claim third place on the eighth lap of a 13-lap race.
Bagnaia's fourth-place finish has increased his championship gap with Martin from 10 points to 16 before the 27-lap grand prix on Sunday.
Bagnaia found some relief in fourth place when the pursuing Maverick Vinales and Marco Bezzecchi became entangled in a frightening incident at Turn 1 during the 12th lap.
Vinales surged ahead of Bezzecchi as they approached Turn 1. However, the VR46 team member was unable to halt his Ducati in time and collided with the rear of the Aprilia.
Bezzecchi required assistance to leave the track and was carried away on a stretcher. Shortly thereafter, he managed to ride on the back of a scooter to return to the paddock. Authorities are currently looking into the incident.
At the beginning of the 13-lap sprint race, Martin successfully maintained his leading position, while Marquez, who started in second place, dropped to eighth place after veering off course at Turn 1.
At the conclusion of the initial lap, Martin had already established a lead of 0.8 seconds ahead of his competitors, setting a precedent for the race as the Pramac racer steadily increased his advantage.
This occurred even though he faced the risk of a long lap penalty due to a track limits warning he received on the third lap.
As lap four began, Bagnaia had advanced to second position after starting from fifth on the grid, yet he was unable to close the gap on Martin's lead.
Following from behind, Marquez was making a strong comeback from eighth place. By lap six, the eight-time world champion had moved into the podium positions, overtaking Bezzecchi.
Marquez swiftly caught up with Bagnaia and overtook him for second place at Turn 4 on the eighth lap. Meanwhile, Bastianini advanced into third position at Turn 10.
Both competitors swiftly overtook the world champion, with Martin holding a 3.1-second advantage as they began the ninth lap.
Marquez managed to catch up to Martin, but the Pramac rider maintained his speed in the last laps to clinch his sixth sprint victory of 2024.
Bagnaia finished in fourth place, trailing his teammate Bastianini by 2.511 seconds. Meanwhile, VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio secured the fifth position, though he is currently being scrutinized for a possible violation related to tyre pressure.
Franco Morbidelli secured the sixth position riding the sister Pramac Ducati, followed by Raul Fernandez representing Trackhouse Aprilia. Meanwhile, Aleix Espargaro, also from the factory Aprilia team, and Augusto Fernandez from Tech3 GASGAS clinched the last point by finishing in ninth place.
In a chaotic sprint filled with crashes, Fernandez earned his first sprint points since the race in France. The other KTM riders also went down, and crashes claimed Gresini's Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco from LCR Honda as well.
