Marc Marquez achieves a long-awaited victory at the 2024 Aragon MotoGP, securing his first grand prix win in nearly three years.
The rider from Gresini Racing secured another win today by maintaining the lead from the beginning to the end, marking a weekend where he consistently stayed ahead in dry conditions.
However, intense excitement unfolded as team-mate and younger sibling Alex Marquez clashed with the current champion, Francesco Bagnaia, for the third position, with just six laps remaining.
Bagnaia, bouncing back from yet another sluggish beginning, managed to catch up to Marquez. He then attempted an overtake when the Spaniard drifted off course into the left-hand Turn 12.
However, as the rider from Italy swerved in front of the Gresini racer into the upcoming right curve, Marquez made contact with the rear of the red motorcycle, causing both riders to skid across the gravel.
Alarmingly, Bagnaia found himself trapped beneath the motorcycles during their fall and, despite managing to get up, he proceeded to the Medical Centre. Early assessments indicate that he sustained no broken bones.
The incident involving Bagnaia and Alex Marquez is currently being examined by the FIM Stewards.
The incident not only secured a podium position for KTM newcomer Pedro Acosta but also increased the championship lead for second-place finisher Jorge Martin. Additionally, it halted a streak of eight consecutive races where only Ducati riders had finished on the podium on Sundays.
Overnight rainfall and the mandatory switch from the soft to the medium rear tyre resulted in a 12-second delay compared to the event in 2022.
The dirty left side of the track raised alarms, with the factory Ducati team caught in a tense pre-race discussion, casting anxious glances towards Bagnaia's third position on the starting grid.
For a valid reason.
Bagnaia experienced a similar disastrous beginning to his Sprint race, falling to seventh place.
This moved up to sixth position after Miguel Oliveira slid out in the last turn of the first lap, and then advanced to fifth when Franco Morbidelli went off track on the 9th lap out of 23.
Bagnaia, who had issues with his front tire leading to a drop to ninth position in the Sprint, overtook KTM newcomer Pedro Acosta halfway through the race and then focused on catching up to Alex Marquez…
The Aragon track, previously the site of a MotoGP race in 2022, underwent a full resurfacing to prepare for its comeback this year.
Because there was insufficient MotoGP data on the new track surface, Michelin increased the rear tyre allocation for this weekend from two to three.
Raul Fernandez, Fabio di Giannantonio, and Jack Miller faced penalties due to insufficient tire pressure during Sunday's competition.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that riders are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tyre (previously 1.88 bar) for at least 60% (previously 50%) of a Grand Prix race distance, or 30% for a Sprint race.
If a driver does not achieve the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will receive a penalty of 16 seconds added to their race time after the event. For a Sprint or shorter race, the penalty will be halved to 8 seconds.
The MotoGP circuit is now set to make its way to Misano, where it will stage the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix this following weekend.
