Marc Marquez achieves a stellar victory at the 2024 Aragon MotoGP, marking his first grand prix win in nearly three years.
The Gresini rider secured another win by leading from start to finish, just like in yesterday's Sprint race, dominating a weekend where he remained unbeaten in dry conditions.
However, significant drama unfolded when teammate and younger sibling Alex Marquez clashed with current champion Francesco Bagnaia while battling for third place with six laps remaining.
Bagnaia, after another sluggish beginning, caught up to Marquez and attempted to overtake him when the Spanish rider veered off course at the left-hand Turn 12.
However, as the Italian rider veered in front of the Gresini competitor heading into the next right-hand turn, Marquez made contact with the rear of the red bike, causing both riders to tumble through the gravel.
In a concerning incident, Bagnaia ended up trapped beneath the motorcycles as they fell. Despite this, he managed to walk away and proceeded to the Medical Centre. Early indications point to no broken bones.
The FIM Stewards are currently looking into the incident between Bagnaia and Alex Marquez.
The collision not only allowed KTM newcomer Pedro Acosta to secure a spot on the podium, but it also increased Jorge Martin's championship lead, breaking a streak of eight consecutive Sunday podium finishes exclusively by Ducati riders.
Due to dirty rain during the night and a mandatory switch from a soft to a medium rear tire, the race ended up being 12 seconds slower compared to the 2022 event.
The dirty left side of the starting grid raised concerns, with the Ducati factory team engaging in an intense discussion before the race while anxiously eyeing Bagnaia’s third place position.
For a valid reason.
Bagnaia experienced a similar poor start in the Sprint race, causing him to fall back to seventh place.
The position advanced to sixth as Miguel Oliveira slipped at the final turn of the first lap, and then to fifth when Franco Morbidelli went off course on the ninth lap of the 23-lap race.
Bagnaia, who had earlier reported a problem with his front tire after dropping to ninth place in the Sprint, overtook KTM newcomer Pedro Acosta halfway through the race and then began to focus on catching up to Alex Marquez…
The Aragon track, which last welcomed a MotoGP race in 2022, underwent a full resurfacing in preparation for this year's event.
Because there is no MotoGP data available for the new track surface, Michelin has increased the number of rear tyre options for this weekend from two to three.
Raul Fernandez, Fabio di Giannantonio, and Jack Miller received penalties for having low tire pressure during the race on Sunday.
Starting in 2024, new tyre pressure regulations dictate that riders must maintain a front tyre pressure of at least 1.8 bar for 60% of the Grand Prix race distance, a change from the previous 50% requirement. For Sprint races, the minimum pressure must be upheld for 30% of the race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix will be a post-race time penalty of 16 seconds, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or short race.
The MotoGP circuit moves directly to Misano for the San Marino Grand Prix happening next weekend.
