Marquez Embraces Future with Bagnaia at Ducati: Aiming for Harmony and Higher Performance in MotoGP
Marc Marquez reacts to Bagnaia's 'exceptional or a catastrophe' comment about being team-mates
Marc Marquez thinks rivaling Francesco Bagnaia as team-mates in the upcoming season will elevate both their performances – he's rooting for Pecco to clinch the 2024 championship if he himself doesn't.
Marc Marquez is optimistic, harboring thoughts, hopes, and desires for a positive relationship with his fellow MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia within the Ducati team garage in 2025.
Currently participating in his first season with Ducati under the Gresini team, Marquez reacted to Bagnaia's comments in an interview with MotoGP.com. Bagnaia had mentioned that their upcoming team collaboration "might turn out to be fantastic, or it could completely fail!"
"Bagnaia further mentioned, "It remains to be seen how things will unfold next year once we begin. It might turn into a complete mess if we end up yelling or getting into arguments."
"However, I believe we're both highly intelligent, and he'll adjust flawlessly," Bagnaia further stated.
In response to a question from Dorna's Louis Suddaby on the eve of the Austrian MotoGP weekend, Marquez highlighted the advantages of having two leading riders as teammates:
"My aspiration and desire is for a positive dynamic to prevail within the garage, and ultimately, I believe that internal rivalry enhances the performance of both riders."
"The situation has always been the same and it's expected to continue in this manner. I have a lot to gain from his expertise, particularly as he's the leading Ducati competitor."
During the official pre-event press conference, when asked about the same subject, Marquez emphasized that although joining the team of a MotoGP champion is a novel experience for him, he has previously competed alongside numerous elite riders and has emerged victorious against each one.
Embarking on this journey marks a fresh chapter for me, as previously I found myself part of the Repsol Honda squad, holding the title of the reigning champion. The scene shifted when Jorge Lorenzo and Joan Mir, both champions of the world, joined the fray.
"However, the context had changed as I was more familiar with the motorcycle. Venturing into this will be a fresh challenge for me since Pecco is the benchmark within Ducati. Sporting the number one on his fairing, his speed is unparalleled, and there's much I have to absorb from his riding technique."
"Indeed, I already possess the information, but the environment within the garage consistently varies. From this perspective, I am optimistic that we can support one another. Ultimately, if he performs well and I do too, this mutual competitiveness will serve as the greatest advantage within the garage to elevate our performance."
When asked who they would prefer to win the 2024 championship if they themselves couldn't secure the title, the three leading contenders in the world championship – Jorge Martin, Bagnaia, and Enea Bastianini – faced difficulty in responding. In contrast, Marquez provided a straightforward answer:
"Francesco."
What's the
"Since he's going to be part of my team, I'd rather have the reigning world champion in our pit."
Bagnaia begins the 11th out of 20 races trailing Martin by merely three points at the summit of the leaderboard. Enea Bastianini, who triumphed twice at Silverstone, is 49 points away from the lead, with Marquez lagging behind by 62 points.
