Marquez Disputes Stewards’ Decision in Controversial Bastianini-Martin Misano Finale
Marc Marquez Disputes Stewards' Decision on Bastianini/Martin Incident
The eight-time world champion supports Martin in the controversy over the last-lap maneuver at Misano.
Marc Marquez expressed his disagreement with MotoGP stewards' choice not to penalize Enea Bastianini for his contentious overtaking move on Jorge Martin during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Martin, who is currently at the top of the championship standings, maintained his lead for the majority of the 27-lap race on Sunday at Misano, successfully holding off the determined efforts of Bastianini.
During the last lap, Bastianini maneuvered his official Ducati bike to overtake Martin on the inside at Turn 4, resulting in a collision between the two riders.
Martin had to veer significantly off course, and Bastianini also went past the kerb as he took the lead.
Bastianini secured victory in the race with a five-second lead, as the stewards decided against imposing a penalty on the Italian, letting the outcome remain unchanged.
Marquez, who secured third place following Francesco Bagnaia's crash on the 21st lap, acknowledges that Bastianini's victory negatively impacts him because it pushes the Italian one point ahead in the championship standings.
He disagrees with the stewards' ruling and feels that Martin should have regained his position since Bastianini also went off the track.
"I watched a replay," Marquez mentioned.
"Enea also went off the track. In terms of the championship and our interests, this is not favorable."
“However, in my opinion, if Enea also went off the track, then he should lose one position.”
"When you execute a bold maneuver to pass another car and remain within the track limits, it isn't an issue."
"But if you leave the track, it means you should lose a position. I disagree with the decision [not to investigate by the stewards]."
"However, once again, this situation doesn't benefit our championship aspirations. But that's how it is."
Martin voiced his disappointment over the incident, stating that he felt he "deserved" the victory and that Bastianini had "no space" to attempt that maneuver.
He currently holds a 24-point lead in the championship following Bagnaia's accident, whereas Gresini's Marquez is trailing by 60 points in fourth place after a challenging Emilia Romagna weekend where he couldn't keep up with the GP24s' speed.
