Marc Marquez’s Triumph: A Perfect Weekend at Aragon Ends Three-Year Victory Drought
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put a lot of pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP event.
He mentioned, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I understood the significance of today's race."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by triumphing in last weekend’s Aragon MotoGP, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they had led in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to claim his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt fantastic right from the start," he stated. "It was an incredibly long race, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3–4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, achieving this victory felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had undergone, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant support, with the Gresini team offering me a crucial chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward.”
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various things in the closing laps.
"In the last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's always like a celebration there."
"Beyond everything else, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, when you're going through profound difficulties, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who are more affected by your struggles than you are—truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt unusual because in other races the adrenaline was higher, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win after leading every session except the rain-soaked Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "During yesterday's Sprint, I couldn't find any joy because I was aware of the significance of today and the crucial chance it presented."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it feels like you can handle everything, staying consistent and making smart decisions; but you're essentially the same person. Without the speed, however, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his return to success following a serious arm injury sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win becomes greater."
"Although I've won 60 times, those two victories, along with my first MotoGP win, are the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I stayed highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez recognized that a race victory was within reach. He acknowledged that opportunities would come their way. However, he pointed out that competing for the championship is a different matter, requiring continued effort and dedication.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
