Marc Marquez’s Perfect Aragon MotoGP Triumph: Ending a Three-Year Victory Drought with Emotional Win
Marc Marquez stated he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today's race," he said.
Last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win, celebrating what he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he didn't record a lap time during it.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the press conference after the race. “We were in front in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during nearly three years without a win and the relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to achieve his 60th top-class victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he remarked. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, securing this win felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the journey we had undertaken, the support from everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I started out as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we have set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and cheerful place, it's like a constant celebration there."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. During challenging and tough times, having a genuine and compassionate team who were more distressed than I was made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since the excitement was greater in other races where I finished second or third. Today's event was marked by emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the wet Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he remarked. "During the Sprint yesterday, I couldn't really enjoy it because I was aware of the significance of today and understood that I had a crucial chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, maintain consistency, and make intelligent decisions. However, if you lack speed, it becomes extremely challenging to manage the situation effectively."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez sees this victory on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez remarked, "I consider it to be on par with my experience in Germany in 2021."
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win becomes greater."
"Indeed, I've secured 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique manner, providing that extra assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease, feeling a natural rhythm, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he believed winning was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
“In the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is on the horizon,” Marquez remarked. “It was clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is a different matter; for that, we need to continue putting in the effort.”
"However, it was in Valencia that I began to realize it would eventually come."
