A jubilant Marc Marquez clinched his first Sprint victory and his first 'MotoGP win' of any sort since 2021, with a commanding performance before his home crowd at Aragon.
Jorge Martin's second-place finish allowed the Pramac Ducati rider to reclaim the championship lead, following a disappointing performance from the current champion, Francesco Bagnaia.
During practice and qualifying, Marquez was consistently the fastest, securing pole position with an impressive 0.8-second lead over Pedro Acosta and Bagnaia. He quickly pulled away from the pack once the race began.
The Gresini rider's lead reached nearly four seconds as he completed the 11-lap race.
However, since Sprints don't count as official victories, Marquez is now aiming for his long-anticipated 60th MotoGP win on Sunday.
Due to those beginning on the less clean side of the track, such as Bagnaia, getting off to a slow start, Martin, who began from the second row, managed to position himself between Marquez and Acosta.
Bagnaia advanced from sixth place to fourth, but then went wide on the track and fell back behind Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira.
The current two-time world champion found himself on the back foot, falling behind Brad Binder, his team-mate Enea Bastianini, and an aggressive Fabio Quartararo on the Yamaha.
Bagnaia signaled to his Michelin engineer upon entering the Ducati garage following the race.
Aleix Espargaro had difficulties at the start and later collided with Fabio di Giannantonio at the first turn, causing him to crash. Johann Zarco and Franco Morbidelli also failed to finish the race, adding their names to the list of riders who did not complete.
Every racer opted for an identical setup, selecting medium front and soft rear tires.
The Aragon track, which was the venue for a MotoGP race in 2022, has undergone a full resurfacing in preparation for this year's event.
Because there is no MotoGP data available for the newly resurfaced track, Michelin has decided to increase the rear tyre options from two to three for this weekend.
New tire pressure regulations for 2024 stipulate that riders are required to maintain a minimum front tire pressure of 1.8 bar, down from the previous 1.88 bar, for 60% of the full Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the prior 50%. For Sprint races, this minimum must be upheld for 30% of the distance.
If a competitor does not meet the minimum requirement during a Grand Prix, they will incur a 16-second time penalty after the race. For a Sprint or short race, the penalty will be reduced to 8 seconds.
