Marc Marquez Predicts Continued Disadvantage with GP23 in Flyaway Rounds, Reflects on ‘Strange’ Wins and Grateful for Bagnaia’s ‘Present
Marc Marquez anticipates the GP23 and GP24 races will show noticeable differences during the flyaway rounds.
Marc Marquez maintains that his victories occurred only under unusual circumstances.
Marc Marquez anticipates that his equipment will continue to put him at a disadvantage as MotoGP enters its series of overseas races.
Marquez is competing for the championship riding a Ducati from last year, while Jorge Martin, Pecco Bagnaia, and Enea Bastianini have the newest model of the bike.
There has been extensive discussion regarding the distinctions between the GP23 and the GP24, and Marquez expects that minor difference to persist during the upcoming flyaway races.
“It’s been the same throughout the year, particularly during the latter half of the season,” he commented regarding the contrast between the GP23 and GP24.
"I secured victories in two races, but they were under unusual circumstances. This weekend, the track had excellent grip, which made it tougher for me compared to the last race at Misano, where the temperatures were higher and the track was slower."
"I felt more at ease there. However, when I attempted to maintain my speed yesterday, I ended up crashing twice."
"That made it clear to me that I wasn't prepared for this weekend, so I decided to fall back, secure fourth place in the race, and see what we can achieve in the upcoming events."
“That's why I always emphasize that to contend for the championship down the line, I need to get just a bit better. Finding that extra half-tenth, tenth, or even two-tenths can often be the deciding factor at the race's conclusion.”
Marquez thankful for 'gift'
Marquez mentioned that he was set for a fourth-place result in the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix no matter his efforts until Francesco Bagnaia's "gift".
The Gresini rider struggled to match his previous race-winning performance from the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano last weekend. A crash during Q2 further impeded him, resulting in a seventh-place start.
Marquez mentioned that his goal for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was to finish in fourth place. He also observed that trying to narrow the distance to the front runners wouldn’t help him improve his standing.
As a result, he chose to secure his position, and Bagnaia's late crash from third place ultimately handed him a spot on the podium.
Marquez stated that his objective at the beginning of the race was to secure fourth place.
"In the initial segment of the race, my focus was on managing [Pedro] Acosta and [Marco] Bezzecchi, as they were the competitors capable of challenging me for fourth position."
"When I arrived, I realized that taking significant risks would likely result in finishing fourth, possibly trailing the leader by around four seconds."
"Reducing the level of risk would result in finishing in fourth place, trailing the leader by eight seconds."
"In the end, it turned out the same as what we aimed for. Luckily for us, Pecco made an error, which handed us a gift and a spot on the podium."
“Thrilled that the team has secured another podium finish at their home race.”
Following Enea Bastianini's victory in the grand prix, Marquez has dropped to fourth place in the overall rankings, although he remains just 60 points behind the championship leader.
