Marc Marquez Optimistic About Future Team-Up with Francesco Bagnaia, Eyes 2024 Title for Pecco
Marc Marquez reacts to Bagnaia's 'super good or a disaster' comment about being team-mates
Marc Marquez thinks that being team-mates with Francesco Bagnaia next year will elevate their performance levels. He also wishes for Pecco to claim the 2024 title if he himself cannot.
Marc Marquez expresses optimism that his interaction with fellow multi-time MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia in the Ducati factory team will be positive in 2025.
Marquez, who is racing for Gresini in his first season with Ducati, reacted to remarks made by Bagnaia in an interview with MotoGP.com. In that interview, the Italian rider suggested that their upcoming collaboration "could be fantastic or it could end terribly!"
“We’ll have to wait until next year to find out,” Bagnaia said. “It could turn out badly if we end up yelling or getting into arguments.”
"However, I believe that we are both quite intelligent and he will adjust seamlessly," Bagnaia commented.
When Louis Suddaby from Dorna questioned Marquez about his previous comments right before the Austrian MotoGP this weekend, Marquez highlighted the advantage of having two leading riders on the same team.
“I believe, anticipate, and desire that the atmosphere within the team will remain positive. Ultimately, I think that internal competition will help elevate the performance of both riders."
"It has always been this way and will continue to be. I have the opportunity to learn from him since he is the leading Ducati rider."
During the official pre-event press conference, Marquez was asked about the same topic and he emphasized that, although it's a novel experience for him to join a MotoGP champion's team, he's been teamed up with numerous top riders before and has outperformed them all.
"This will be a fresh experience for me as previously I was part of the Repsol Honda team, where defending champions like Jorge Lorenzo and Joan Mir, both of whom have won world titles, joined the team."
"[However] the context was different since I was more familiar with the bike. This time will be a new experience for me because Pecco is the benchmark within Ducati. He sports the number one on his fairing, indicating his incredible speed, and I have a lot to learn from him and his riding style.
"Certainly, I already have the information, but the environment within the same garage is always unique. From that perspective, I hope we can support one another. Ultimately, if both of us perform well, it will greatly benefit our efforts to elevate our performance."
As Jorge Martin, Bagnaia, and Enea Bastianini, who are leading the world championship, grappled with the hypothetical question of who they would want to see as the 2024 champion if they couldn't win the title themselves, Marquez provided a straightforward response:
"Pecco."
For what reason
"Since he is going to join my team, I would rather have the reigning world champion in the garage."
Bagnaia enters the 11th race of the 20-race season just three points shy of Martin, who leads the standings. Enea Bastianini, who has won twice at Silverstone, trails by 49 points, while Marquez is 62 points behind.
