Marc Marquez Finds Form: From Struggles to Success in Austria’s MotoGP Friday Sessions
Marc Marquez: “This is one of my best Fridays, but I'm still not quite there”
Marc Marquez: “In the previous races, I felt like I was lagging by two steps, but now it's just one step behind”
Marc Marquez bounced back from a chaotic first practice session to experience one of his most successful Fridays of the MotoGP season in Austria.
The Gresini team member, feeling as though he's been lagging behind in recent races, arrived at the Red Bull Ring once more with the aim of having an incident-free weekend.
Being 18th on the morning timesheets seemed disappointing, but Marquez's position didn't reflect his true pace. He had 'lost' quicker laps or the feeling with his bike.
Marquez quickly climbed the timesheets to take the lead in the afternoon session, eventually securing 4th place and a direct spot in Qualifying 2.
During the first practice session, I felt good and was pleased with my performance. However, numerous yellow and red flags disrupted the session, and I occasionally went off into the run-off area, causing many of my laps to be invalidated," Marquez shared with MotoGP.com.
"However, in the afternoon, we got off to a strong start, and the key takeaway is that I now feel significantly more at ease with the setup at this track."
"This implies that my confidence gradually increases as my connection with the bike improves."
"We seem to be among the top four or five teams, and from now on, it's crucial for us to secure a spot in the top six during the qualifying rounds."
He stated, "This was one of the most outstanding Fridays of the season. While Sachsenring was indeed great, the afternoon was marred by a significant crash."
"However, this Friday turned out to be quite favorable. I mentioned earlier that I needed to handle the first practice session (FP1) differently because I had experienced some accidents in the past that I couldn't quite comprehend."
"Today we tried a new approach, and the bike's setup improved, so the team performed excellently."
Although it's just Friday, I have to admit that in the previous races, I felt like I was trailing by two steps, and now I'm still lagging by one step.
“We must continue refining the minor aspects, but the final phase is the hardest!”
Surveying his competitors, Marquez commented: "Pecco was particularly quick. Martin showed impressive speed too, and Bastianini, despite being tenth, had a strong race pace. Morbidelli also seems to be performing well."
"Alright, let's determine if we can engage in combat with them tomorrow."
Marquez enters Saturday's Sprint race positioned fourth in the world championship standings, trailing double Silverstone victor Bastianini by 13 points.
