Marc Marquez Eyes Victory at 2024 Aragon GP: Is This His Best Shot at Ending the Winless Streak?
Does the Aragon GP represent Marc Marquez's top opportunity for a MotoGP victory in 2024?
Here's what our reporters think.
More than a thousand days have passed since Marc Marquez last clinched victory in a MotoGP event. Is it possible that this drought will conclude at the 2024 Aragon Grand Prix?
The eight-time world champion has faced challenging seasons with Honda, resulting in a period of fewer victories.
This year, after moving to the Gresini-led Ducati team, he has made it to the podium nine times in both sprint races and grand prix events. He's been on the cusp of his first win since the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix several times.
MotoGP makes its comeback to Aragon, marking its first appearance since 2022, at a circuit where Marquez has historically performed exceptionally well, securing six victories throughout his career.
In the most recent installment of the Crash MotoGP Podcast, our reporters discuss if Aragon could be the circuit where Marquez ends his losing streak.
"Lewis Duncan, a MotoGP journalist, mentioned, 'For me, the key focus this weekend is undoubtedly Marc.'"
"The track has a left-handed layout, and he's consistently performed well at Aragon. I believe the upcoming weeks present the greatest chance for Marc to secure a grand prix victory this season."
"Aragon has always been a stronghold for him, perfectly matching his approach."
"After taking a year-long break and with the introduction of a new track surface, the one-year-old Ducati might have an advantage in getting up to speed faster than perhaps the official team bike, as it's generally more fine-tuned."
"I have high hopes for Marc this weekend, and if things don’t pan out, I’ll be quite let down. I believe this is one of the few significant opportunities he has in the next few weeks."
For the past several years, Ducati has dominated the Aragon circuit, with Marquez falling short against Francesco Bagnaia in their 2022 showdown.
"Jordan Moreland, the Social Media Manager at Crash.net, commented that Ducati has enjoyed significant success in their recent appearances at this venue, with Bastianini securing a win in 2022 and Pecco triumphing over Marc in 2021."
Marc now possesses top-notch equipment and boasts six victories across different categories at this track. Additionally, a corner on the circuit is named in his honor.
"Thus, without intending to burden Marc Marquez, it appears he doesn't require any added stress from our end, yet this presents a prime chance for him to genuinely compete and challenge Bagnaia, for instance."
Peter McLaren, the MotoGP Editor for Crash.net, remarked, "I believe it presents an excellent opportunity for him to return to his form at Jerez and Le Mans, where he was truly competing with the leading pair.
As you mentioned, it's an excellent circuit for him. The Marquez siblings seem to treat it like their home race, always attracting a large group of supporters.
Aragon, seemingly isolated, has nevertheless become a favored circuit for them. Therefore, he'll be highly motivated to perform excellently, presenting one of his prime opportunities.
"Upcoming are a couple to a few races on tracks that run counter-clockwise, including Valencia and Phillip Island, with Buriram also being a circuit where he performs exceptionally well."
"However, achieving success won't be straightforward for him; many assumed he would have secured a victory by this point."
"This highlights the significance of seizing these chances. Marc's attitude is essentially, 'it's not a big deal that it's been 1000 days since my last victory; if I don't secure wins this year, I'll definitely do so next year'."
"Marc Marquez has his sights set on victory, doesn't he? This weekend presents a prime opportunity for that, so much will hinge on Friday's performance, and not just for him but also for riders such as Bagnaia."
"If Bagnaia leads the standings from the first day, it spells trouble for his competitors."
