Marc Marquez Eyes Perfect Weekend to End Three-Year MotoGP Win Drought at Aragon
Marc Marquez candidly speaks about his prospects of breaking his winless streak at the counter-clockwise Aragon circuit, stating, "If I manage to execute everything flawlessly throughout the weekend, I might be able to compete with the leading riders."
Despite his strong track record at Aragon, Marc Marquez thinks he will need to have an absolutely flawless weekend to stand a chance of breaking his MotoGP winless streak on Sunday.
From 2016 to 2019, the Spanish ace remained undefeated at the Aragon circuit while riding for Repsol Honda, amassing a total of six victories there before arm injuries sidelined him for the 2020 season.
Marquez quickly returned to the leading position at Aragon in 2021, just missing out on a win to Francesco Bagnaia.
Rider #93 made a return after undergoing additional arm surgery in the 2022 race but encountered incidents with Fabio Quartararo and Takaaki Nakagami during the first lap.
Since transitioning to Gresini Ducati this season, Marquez has often led the pack. However, his winless run in MotoGP is nearing the three-year mark, and he understands that previous successes no longer matter.
"Clearly, we're heading to a track that I am fond of and have performed well on previously. However, we're focused on the present," Marquez stated on Thursday. "I realize that if I execute everything perfectly this weekend, I might have the opportunity to compete with the leading riders."
"Indeed, I was very close in Austria, and it was one of the weekends where I felt most connected with the bike. Now, it's important to see how things go in FP1 and FP2 here. These sessions will be vital for me."
"Starting with a strong foundation, we aim to compete with the leading contenders."
Seated with the three factory GP24 riders who are above him in the rankings – Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and Enea Bastianini – Marquez commented:
"I look forward to the opportunity on some weekends to compete against these riders who are currently very fast and performing exceptionally well."
"We will make an attempt. My goal is to compete for a spot on the podium, and then we'll see if we get an opportunity to contend for the win."
"If it doesn't happen, we'll have more chances next year!" said the 2025 factory Ducati racer with a smile.
The counterclockwise layout of the Aragon circuit, which has been repaved in preparation for its 2024 MotoGP comeback, is an element that inherently benefits Marquez.
However, "as demonstrated at Sachsenring; it's composed entirely of left-hand turns, and they exhibited incredible speed there."
"We must grasp both our own standing and the standing of our competitors."
"It's a track I enjoy, which aids in how I approach practice sessions and comprehend the bike's setup."
"However, I cannot overlook the fact that I have yet to secure a victory this season."
"In order to have a shot, whether this Sunday or in the coming ones, we must continue to progress, educate ourselves, and enhance our skills."
Marquez begins this weekend trailing Bastianini by 22 points and is 83 points behind the championship leader, Bagnaia.
