Marc Marquez Eyes Aragon Triumph with Perfect Weekend Amid MotoGP Win Drought
Marc Marquez candidly discusses breaking his winless streak at the counter-clockwise Aragon track
"By achieving an impeccable weekend, perhaps I'll be in contention with the leading riders."
Despite his notable track record at Aragon, Marc Marquez feels that only an impeccable performance throughout the weekend will offer him an opportunity to break his MotoGP winless streak this Sunday.
The Spanish champion maintained a perfect record at Aragon, winning every race from 2016 to 2019 while competing for Repsol Honda, accumulating a total of six victories at the track before his 2020 season was derailed due to injuries to his arm
Marquez quickly returned to the forefront at Aragon 2021, closely missing the win to Francesco Bagnaia.
In the 2022 season, the rider with the #93 made a return to racing after undergoing another arm operation, but encountered a collision with Fabio Quartararo and Takaaki Nakagami during the first lap.
Despite often leading the pack since his transition to Gresini Ducati this year, Marquez is nearing a three-year drought in MotoGP victories, fully aware that previous successes hold no weight now.
"Clearly, we're coming to a track that I'm fond of, have had success with previously, and really enjoy," Marquez remarked on Thursday. "However, we're in the present," he added. "I'm aware that if I can manage to have an ideal weekend, perhaps I'll get the opportunity to compete with the leading racers.
"Indeed, during my time in Austria, I almost made it and experienced one of the most outstanding weekends when it came to my connection with the bike. Therefore, the initial sessions, FP1 and FP2, will be pivotal for me to see where we stand."
"Beginning with a strong foundation, let's explore whether we can match up with the leading contenders."
Positioned next to the three leading factory GP24 riders in the rankings – Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and Enea Bastianini – Marquez commented:
"I aspire to seize opportunities during some weekends to compete against these riders who are currently extremely quick and exhibit superior riding skills."
"We'll give it our best shot. My goal is to compete for a spot on the podium and then see if the opportunity arises to contend for the win."
"Otherwise, we can look forward to more chances next year!" beamed the Ducati factory rider set for the 2025 season.
The counterclockwise layout of the Aragon track, which was repaved in preparation for its MotoGP comeback in 2024, inherently benefits Marquez.
However, as observed at the Sachsenring; it's dominated by left turns, and they were extremely quick.
"It's crucial for us to grasp our own standing as well as the caliber of those we are up against."
"I enjoy this track, which aids in how I tackle practice sessions and grasp the bike's configuration."
"Yet, it remains ingrained in my memory that I failed to secure a victory this season
"Therefore, it's essential to continue our efforts, persist in acquiring knowledge, and strive for advancement if we aim to seize opportunities, be it this Sunday or in the Sundays to follow."
Marquez enters this weekend trailing Bastianini by 22 points and is 83 points away from the championship frontrunner, Bagnaia.
