Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "felt the need to push himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I couldn't take pleasure in the Sprint race because I was aware of the significance of today," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in last weekend’s Aragon MotoGP, a race he called "perfect" after an ideal weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night continuing into Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the post-race press conference. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose along with my team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"We had an incredible experience right from the start of the race," he remarked. "It was an extremely long race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging, but when I finally crossed the finish line, it felt as though I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to my back becoming increasingly strained with each passing step, winning felt unbelievable. My thoughts instantly turned to the entire journey, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to strive forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various things in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful—it's like a constant celebration there."
"Beyond that, the primary factor was the people around me. In extremely challenging times, when you're in a tough spot, having a compassionate team, truly kind individuals who are even more affected than I am, is what made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since in some other races, the adrenaline was higher for second and third-place finishes compared to today. This time, it was more about the emotional experience rather than a rush of adrenaline."
Marquez, who led all sessions except the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, confessed to feeling pressured to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he explained. "You could tell from my performance in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having fun. I was well aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to concentrate. When you possess the speed, it appears that you can handle the circumstances, remain steady, and act wisely; however, you haven't changed. It's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete more closely with the leading contenders."
Marquez views this victory as being on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback after fracturing his arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
“When you face numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes.”
"Although I have achieved 60 wins, the two recent victories and my first one in MotoGP stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost to my confidence, enhancing it in a special way."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, maintaining a good flow, but I made sure to stay extremely focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
Marquez commented, "During the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is within reach. It became clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts for that goal."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
