Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he placed a lot of expectations on himself to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he didn't find it enjoyable because he was aware of the day's significance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, an event he called "perfect" afterwards.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
The only session Marquez didn’t lead was the Warm Up, which was wet from rain overnight and into Sunday morning, as he didn’t record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the press conference after the race. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced upon crossing the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we experienced an incredible sensation right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory feel truly amazing. Right away, my thoughts turned to the journey we've had, the support from everyone around me, and the love from my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals now and will continue striving forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, which allowed him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he remarked. "Even more than the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and full of joy; it's always a celebration there."
"Additionally, the primary factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging circumstances, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who were more affected by the situation than I was, made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since in previous races, the excitement was more intense even when securing second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotional than experiencing a surge of adrenaline."
Marc Marquez, who led every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he stated. "During the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I understood how crucial today would be and realized I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle things well, stay consistent, and be smart about it. But you're essentially the same; without the speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
“Let’s aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leaders.”
Marquez sees this victory as being on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, “I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany.”
"When facing numerous injuries and a particularly challenging period, the significance of each victory changes."
"Indeed, I have won 60 times, but those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance for me. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I was also very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the test in Valencia, I understood that a victory is within reach," Marquez stated. "It became clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; for that, we must continue to put in the effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would come eventually."
