Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph: A Journey of Pressure, Perseverance, and Emotional Release
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint race because I was aware of the significance of today."
Last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, Marc Marquez celebrated his first win in nearly three years, calling the weekend "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn't record a lap time during the Warm Up session, which was the only part he didn't lead. The session was wet due to rain that fell overnight from Saturday into Sunday morning.
In the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3–4 kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was extraordinary. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey, the people supporting me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about finishing on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a celebration there."
"In addition to that, the primary factor was the support of those around me. In extremely challenging times, if you lack a compassionate team composed of genuinely kind individuals who are even more affected by the situation than you are, it makes all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual; in other races, the adrenaline was higher even when celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling the emotion rather than the rush of adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a Grand Prix win after leading every session except for the wet Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he commented. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn't really enjoy it because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're moving quickly, it seems easier to handle things, stay steady, and make smart choices. But fundamentally, you're the same person; without that speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly tough."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading competitors."
Marquez views this win as comparable to his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, his first significant achievement since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, “I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 race in Germany.”
"When you face numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of the wins becomes greater."
"I did win 60 times, but those two wins, along with my first in MotoGP, are the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease, in a good rhythm, but I made an extra effort to avoid any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is on the horizon." He added, "I saw that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and we must continue our efforts to reach that goal."
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
