Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with Dominant Performance in Aragon MotoGP: A Perfect Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. He noted, "During the Sprint race, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his dry spell last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, a race he later called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, clinched a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marc Marquez did not record a lap time during the Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain that had fallen overnight and continued into Sunday morning.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, which he and his team chose to skip.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to claim his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "It was a very lengthy race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4kg."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, making this victory all the more extraordinary. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had undertaken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a novice rider, I aimed to put in maximum effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to strive towards them."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage was on my mind. It's always lively and cheerful there, like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. During extremely challenging moments, being surrounded by a compassionate and empathetic team—people who were suffering even more than I was—truly made a significant difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since other races had given me a bigger adrenaline rush, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about the emotions rather than the adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "You could see during yesterday's Sprint that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, everything seems more manageable—you appear consistent and smart. However, without the speed, handling the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as being on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his initial triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as 2021 in Germany."
"When a team faces numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of their wins changes."
Indeed, I have achieved 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence uniquely and provide you with an additional sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, and it felt effortless, just going with the flow. However, I remained highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
Marquez stated, "During the Valencia test, I came to understand that a race victory is within reach. It became clear to me that we will have our chances. However, competing for the championship requires continued effort on our part."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
