Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, celebrating a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led the timesheets in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, triumphed in the Sprint race impressively, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez, as he did not record a lap time.
In the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they led all the sessions except for the Warm Up, during which he and his team opted to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he had experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
“I felt incredible throughout the entire race,” he stated. “It was an exceptionally long race, and managing my emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had lost 3-4 kilograms.”
"With each passing step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making the victory feel all the more astonishing. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we've been through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team who offered me the chance. I came in as a new rider, aimed to give my all, and we achieved our goal. Now, we're setting new objectives and continuing forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, it's always a celebration with them."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, when you find yourself in a tough spot, having a compassionate and supportive team—individuals who are more distressed than I am—makes all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the excitement was higher when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion rather than adrenaline."
Marquez confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win, especially after leading in every session except the rain-soaked Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he stated. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you possess speed, it appears as though you can handle the situation with consistency and intelligence; however, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as equally significant to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since he fractured his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, stating that he sees them as equally significant.
"When faced with numerous injuries and experiencing a challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"While I have achieved 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my initial MotoGP win, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that sets them apart."
"I haven't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding along smoothly, staying focused to avoid any errors."
Despite being his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
“In the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is within reach,” said Marquez. “I discovered that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and for that, we need to continue our efforts.”
“But while I was in Valencia, I began to realize that it would come eventually.”
